An 1850s Ancestral Home in Texas - Houzz

In 1981 a woman and her husband cruised by the historic plantation her family had owned for generations. She had heard many stories from her grandmother about the Central Texas home her family had lost during the Great Depression, and after seeing it, she and her husband dreamed of living in it one day.

More than 30 years later, the couple retired from their corporate jobs in California and set about making their Texas dream come true. In 2004 they approached the current owners, who agreed to sell. Next they turned to husband-and-wife team John (architect) and Candace (interior designer) Volz of Volz & Associates to help them with the preservation, restoration, renovation and additions.

Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple with a grown daughter who comes to visit; the wife is descended from the original owner
Location: About 30 miles outside of Austin, Texas
Size: About 7,000 square feet, on 200 acres
That's interesting: This home is a recorded Texas historic landmark built in 1857; the original 2,000-acre plantation was established in 1836. Part of the historic research included getting in touch with a genealogical society of descendants of slaves who had lived there; the clients hosted a lunch where they all swapped family lore, and they are still in touch.

Hangover Soup - Eat Your Kimchi

MARTINA GOT TOO DRU-UNK!
NA NA NA NA NAAAA NA!

So, we were out playing with some friends the other night, listening to Gogostar and Who Who at Club FF (we totally love Club FF in Hongdae, by the way), and we had a bit to drink as well. Now, we?re usually very responsible drinkers. We don?t binge drink, we don?t black out, we don?t lose all of our inhibitions and go nuts, we just enjoy to drink while we dance to live music, you know?

Side note: I never understood how people ?lost their inhibitions? when they?re drunk. How does someone drink to the point that they want to make out with strangers, or pick fights with people, or drive a car, or ? as is the defence for some cases ? even rape someone? This makes NO SENSE TO US WHATSOEVER. When we?re drunk, the first thing that we think to ourselves is ?holy crap: we?re getting too drunk. Stop drinking! Rehydrate! Get some food in your belly. Get the hell out of here!? We don?t get stupid when we?re drunk. We get less eloquent, and our motor skills might waver a bit, but we never do something that we wouldn?t want to do while sober. It?s just so bizarre that people change when they drink. We don?t understand it whatsoever.

Ok, side note over. Point is, we got to the point the other night that we realized, yep, we should pack it in and go home. Martina didn?t fare so well the next day, though, and had a bit of a hangover. We could have laid in bed all day and whined about it like babies, OR WE COULD MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT IT! WOOHOO! Uhhm. Not really the thing that most people would think about doing while hungover, right? Are we just weird? We?re weird, aren?t we? *cough*

So we wanted to make the best out of a bad situation and make a video of us trying something we never tried before: hangover soup! We know next to nothing about it, apart from the fact that old people FREAKING LOVE THIS. Hey! Are you an old Korean person reading this? Do you like Hangover soup? We never see young people eating hangover soup, for some reason. Only old people. Maybe it?s not cool to eat it. Young Korean people: what do you eat when you?re hungover? Tell us your secrets!

Also, my bad for thinking this was Gamja-Tang, when it clearly wasn?t. We didn?t order the soup ourselves, but I heard Gamja-Tang being mentioned in the conversation, so I thought it was Gamja-Tang. It clearly wasn?t, and I knew that after looking at it, but?yeah! That?s why I messed up so bad in the video.

Lastly, for this week?s bloopers we reveal a secret that we?re kind of scared to say in Korea?but, umm. WE HATE MAKGEOLLI! It?s delicious, yes, but we had the worst hangover of our lives because of it in our first year in Korea, and now whenever we smell it we recall the crushing pain of that night. So?no more Makgeolli!

BMW, Toyota working together on next-generation batteries

BMW and Toyota said Thursday the partnership will not involve a capital alliance while spanning a wide range of technologies for green vehicles.

Toyota Motor Corp. and?BMW?Group are working together on next-generation batteries for green vehicles called "lithium-air" as their collaboration, first announced in late 2011, moves ahead in fuel cells, sports vehicles and other fields.

But both sides said Thursday the partnership will not involve a capital alliance while spanning a wide range of technologies for green vehicles.

The Japanese and German automakers aim to complete a fuel-cell vehicle system by 2020, and a concept for a mid-size sports vehicle by the end of this year. They will also work together on developing lightweight technologies such as composites, which will help make cars greener.

Joint research will be started to develop a lithium-air battery, which will be more powerful than the current lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, they said. The technology, which other automakers are also working on, will allow a major part of the battery's energy-making process to come from the oxygen in air.

BMW?AG board member Herbert Diess told reporters the cooperation will help both companies boost competitiveness in new technologies.

"We really share the same vision," he said at a news conference in Nagoya, central Japan, live-streamed at Toyota's Tokyo office.

Toyota Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada said working with?BMW?will allow for a much faster development as they pool their resources.

He said the companies share a corporate culture and they have built trust over the last year. An agreement to work on technologies together was signed in June last year.

BMW, known for its strong design and sporty cars, could be a good match for Toyota, reputed for innovation and solid engineering but sometimes criticized as making dull cars.

Global automakers are forging such partnerships to become more competitive.

French carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen and General Motors Co. of the U.S. have a deal to share in purchases of parts and services to cut costs. Toyota already has a joint venture with Peugeot Citroen to make small cars in Europe.

Bluetooth Comes of Age

To this day, the name Bluetooth brings back bad memories of the wireless cell phone earpiece that was more personal statement than practical tool. It seemed as if every small-time baller had to show he was successful enough to own one and in demand enough to keep it on him all the time, even when out to dinner with his girlfriend?s parents.

But Bluetooth has come of age. It has become the muse of several start-ups and established companies that are finding new and creative ways to take advantage of Bluetooth?s drastic uptick in efficiency, from the Nike Fuelband to the Pebble Smartwatch, which we previously featured on ?This Could Be Big.?

This week we spoke with a start-up out of Southern California called Tethercell, whose founders, Trey Madhyastha and Kellan O'Connor, are former rocket scientists who designed mechanical and fluid systems for the Falcon 9 rocket.

They were at CES this year, showcasing their new technology, which brings the tried-and-trusted AA battery into the 21st century. I think in general we look at the AA battery like a good piece of fruit, something that is fine as it is and best left alone. But where we saw a peach, they also saw a grill and some vanilla ice cream.

Tethercell is a plastic case the size of an AA battery, embedded with Bluetooth 4.0, which is then powered by an AAA battery that fits inside the plastic case. The Bluetooth-enabled battery is then synced with an app on your phone that allows you to turn the device on and off, set a timer and even monitor the amount of power remaining.

Trey and Kellan see this first version of Tethercell as a test bed for future applications and an opportunity to get the technology in the hands of the public. If you want one, you?ll have to wait until May or June, but you can pre-order now on their indiegogo fundraising page, which continues through February.

(AP) ? The Kremlin's evacuation of Russians from Syria on Tuesday marks a turning point in its view of the civil war, representing increasing doubts about Bashar Assad's hold on power and a sober understanding that it has to start rescue efforts before it becomes too late.

The operation has been relatively small-scale ? involving fewer than 100 people, mostly women and children ? but it marks the beginning of what could soon turn into a risky and challenging operation. Analysts warn that rescuing tens of thousands of Russians from the war-stricken country could quickly become daunting as the opposition makes new advances in the battle against the Syrian president.

"It's a sign of distrust in Assad, who seems unlikely to hold on to power," said Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Endowment's Moscow office.

Russia has been Assad's main ally, pooling together with China at the United Nations to block international sanctions against his regime. But it has increasingly distanced itself from the Syrian ruler, signaling it is resigned to the prospect of him losing power.

On Tuesday, four buses carrying about 80 Russians, mainly women married to Syrians and their children, crossed into Lebanon, the first evacuation organized by Moscow since the start of the Syrian conflict nearly two years ago. Russia said a day earlier that about 100 of its citizens in Syria would be taken to Lebanon and flown home.

The land route was presumably chosen because of renewed fighting near the Damascus airport. The first of two planes sent to pick up the Russians took off late Tuesday from Beirut and landed shortly after 5 a.m. (0100 GMT) in Moscow.

The Emergencies Ministry, which sent the planes, said the passengers were being given medical examinations before leaving the airport. It was unclear if any of them had been injured in the fighting.

Malashenko said that the evacuation reflected a strong concern in Moscow that Assad's fall would put Russians in grave danger. "There is a strong likelihood that Assad's foes could unleash a massacre of those whom they see as his supporters," he said.

In addition to tens of thousands of Russians permanently living in Syria, most of whom are Russian women married to Syrian men and their children, there are also an unspecified number of diplomats and military advisers along with their families. The evacuees were permanent residents not connected to the embassy.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the news of Russians leaving Syria "is not surprising and it speaks to the continued deterioration of the security situation and the violence that Assad is leading against his own people."

Asked about the government's faith in Assad, Nuland added: "If you look at the Russian public statements over the last month, they have been evolving somewhat in terms of the level of confidence in whether Assad was going to make it or whether Russia actually had an interest in that."

Georgy Mirsky, the top Middle East expert with the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, a government-funded think tank, warned that Russians in Syria are facing growing risks.

"Many are reluctant to leave, hoping that the situation could somehow stabilize," he said. "But Aleppo is already half-ruined, and it will soon come to that in Damascus too. Sooner or later, Assad is going to lose."

Russia could rely on Assad to provide a military escort for caravans of refugees, but such protection may not be reliable enough with the Syrian army's resources drained by the need to battle rebels all around the country.

Refugee convoys could make an easy target for the rebels when they try to move to neighboring Lebanon for a flight home. Direct Russian flights to Syrian airfields also would be a risky option with rebels possessing portable anti-aircraft missiles.

"That's why they sent the planes now without waiting until the 11th hour when rebels come close to victory," Mirsky said.

Alexander Golts, an independent Moscow-based military analyst, said that if Russia sees Assad's defeat as imminent, it would have to quickly organize a massive air bridge to take its citizens home. He said that such an effort would be extremely challenging and require sending troops to protect an air base in Syria that would be chosen for the evacuation to make sure that no rebels armed with anti-aircraft weapons are in close vicinity.

Even now, with Assad's forces in control of the area around Damascus, Russian planes flew to Beirut in a clear move to reduce security risks, Golts said.

A Russian navy squadron, currently in the Mediterranean, is scheduled to conduct maneuvers off Syria's shores later this month. It includes four landing ships capable of carrying several hundred marines and armored vehicles.

Golts said that that the marines on board the vessels could be deployed to protect an airfield in Syria if Moscow decides to launch a massive evacuation effort.

"Under the most favorable circumstances, it will be barely enough to take control of an air base and ensure its relative security," Golts said. Protecting the area around the base chosen for evacuation is essential to reduce risks posed by portable anti-aircraft missiles, which rebels already have used to down Syrian military aircraft.

The Russian government has given no signal that such an operation could be in the making.

Russian officials have said that both planes and navy ships could be involved in the evacuation of Russian citizens. Russia has a navy base in the Syrian port of Tartus, the only such outpost outside the former Soviet Union, which could be used for loading the evacuees on sea vessels.

Officials haven't given any indication yet that the landing vessels now in the Mediterranean could take any evacuees on board. And after the ships head home after the maneuvers, it would take weeks for another squadron to reach the Mediterranean.

A mass evacuation of Russians from Syria would face other logistical challenges.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that it has contingency plans to evacuate Russians, but it has admitted that only a few thousand of tens of thousands of Russians have left their contact details at the Russian consulate.

Golts said that if the escalating fighting forces Russians to flee Syria en masse, they will have to get to the planes themselves through the war-torn country. "It's hard to imagine how they could organize military protection for convoys," he said.

Kerry to divest some holdings if confirmed as secretary of state

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senator John Kerry and his wife intend to divest holdings in dozens of companies, including oil company Exxon Mobil Corp and drug maker Pfizer Inc, to avoid conflicts of interest if he is confirmed as U.S. secretary of state.

The plan was disclosed in an agreement posted online by the Office of Government Ethics, a U.S. government agency.

Kerry, who is awaiting the Senate's approval to replace Hillary Clinton as America's top diplomat, is one of the richest senators, largely due to the fortune of his second wife, heiress and philanthropist Teresa Heinz Kerry.

The investments Kerry and his wife have agreed to divest include holdings in telecommunications giant AT&T Inc, manufacturer 3M Co, insurer Metlife Inc, defense contractor Raytheon Co, payroll firm Paychex Inc, Tractor Supply Co, Coca-Cola Co, Microsoft Corp, several international banks and private equity funds and H.J. Heinz Co.

John Kerry's investments are held through three family trusts. His wife's investments are held through trusts as well as custodial accounts with Mellon Bank, according to the ethics agreement letter.

Kerry, a five-term Massachusetts senator, promised that he would divest the holdings within 90 days of his confirmation, according to a January 8 letter he sent to a State Department ethics official.

Kerry's net worth was estimated in 2011 to be between $184.3 million and $287.7 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics' analysis of personal finance disclosures.

"I will not participate personally and substantially in any particular matter that has a direct and predictable effect on my financial interests ... unless I first obtain a written waiver," Kerry wrote in the letter.

Kerry also pledged to resign from his positions with the non-profit American Security Project and Harvard University if he is confirmed as secretary of state.

(AP) ? Commemorative events for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. slid seamlessly into celebrations of the swearing-in Monday of the nation's first black president, with many Americans moved by the reminder of how far the country has come since the 1960s.

"This is the dream that Dr. King talked about in his speech. We see history in the making," said Joyce Oliver, who observed King Day by visiting the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., built on the site of the old Lorraine Motel, where King was assassinated in 1968.

In Atlanta, at the 45th annual service for the civil rights leader at the church where he was pastor, those gathered in the sanctuary were invited to stay to watch President Barack Obama's second inauguration on a big-screen TV.

As the nearly three-hour service closed at Ebenezer Baptist Church, organizers suggested forgoing the traditional singing of "We Shall Overcome" because the inauguration would begin. But the crowd shouted protests, so the choir and congregation sang the civil rights anthem before settling in to watch the events in Washington.

In the nation's capital, dozens took pictures of the King statue before walking to the National Mall for the inauguration.

Nicole Hailey, 34, drove all night with her family from Monroe, N.C. She attended Obama's first inauguration four years ago and was carrying a commemorative Metro ticket from that day with Obama's face on it.

She and her family visited the King memorial before the swearing-in.

"It's Martin Luther King's special day," she said. "We're just celebrating freedom."

At the ceremonial inauguration, Obama took the oath on a Bible once owned by King. He called it "a great privilege." The King Bible was one of two used; the other had belonged to Abraham Lincoln.

In Columbia, S.C., civil rights leaders paused during their annual King Day rally to watch the inauguration on a big screen. Most of the crowd of several hundred stayed to watch Obama's address.

"You feel like anything is possible," Jelin Cunningham, a 15-year-old black girl, said of Obama's presidency. "I've learned words alone can't hurt or stop you, because there have been so many hateful things said about him over the past four years."

At the Atlanta service, King's youngest daughter, Bernice King, said the country had been through a difficult year, with divisive elections, military conflicts and natural disasters.

"We pray that this day will be the beginning of a new day in America," she said. "It will be a day when people draw inspiration from the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. It will be a day when people realize and recognize that if it were not for Dr. King and those who fought the fight fought in that movement, we would not be celebrating this presidency."

She stressed her father's commitment to nonviolence, saying that after the 1956 bombing of the family's home in Montgomery, Ala., her father stood on the porch and urged an angry, armed crowd to fight with Christian love ? not guns.

"This apostle of nonviolence perhaps introduced one of the bravest experiences of gun control that we've ever heard of in the history of our nation," she said.

The service also kicked off a year of celebrations of the 50th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered Aug. 28, 1963, in Washington. Students led by King's great-niece Farris Christine Watkins delivered sections of the speech in turn.

By the end, the crowd was on its feet, shouting, "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

The keynote speaker was the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, a socially conservative evangelical association. It marked the first time a Latino had been invited to deliver the King Day address at Ebenezer Baptist.

He urged the audience to complete King's dream.

"Silence is not an option when 30 million of our brothers and sisters live in poverty," he said. "Silence is not an option when 11 million undocumented individuals continue to live in the shadows."

Around the country, parades, service projects and memorials marked the holiday.

Visitors from as far as Europe thronged the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tenn., the city where King was assassinated in 1968. In Detroit, students beautified schools. Others painted murals honoring King in Arkansas, and Texas residents held rallies and donated items to a food bank.

More than 500 people rallied outside the Alabama Capitol in Montgomery, where state employee Jessie Harris declared Obama's president was a sign of "living the dream" King spoke about.

"We have come far, but the struggle is not over," Harris said.

A Man Who Can Cook Is the New Modern Day Mr. Right! Beef ...

Let me begin this post by dispelling the notion that a man who cooks is in some way feminine! On the CONTRARY, a man who can cook to many women is extremely attractive! With that said, let me just put something out there I?ve been saying for some years now; ?A man who can cook is the new modern day Mr. Right!?

To the single ladies?? While wining and dining you is a sure way to make you feel special, there is nothing like a man who will take the time, energy, and effort to cook you a nice meal. I mean most men can read instructions right? They know how to put a bicycle, desk or TV stand together by reading instructions! What would stop their success when reading a recipe? INGREDIENTS:

3 cups of frozen broccoli florets
1 lb. beef stir fry strips
1 cup of long grain white rice & two cups of water (rice is always 2 to 1 ratio)
? cup hoisin sauce
? cup Catalina Dressing (I used Kraft)
1 tbsp. crushed garlic
6 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
Sea Salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
Dried thyme to taste

READY, SET, GO:

Boil the water and add a little sea salt and unsalted butter
Add rice to boiling water, turn the heat down to medium, cover and allow to cook for about 10 ? 15 minutes or until rice is al dente (done ~ smile)
When rice is done add 2 tbsp. unsalted butter and ? tbsp. sea salt and stir
NOW LET?S MAKE THE BEEF
Heat extra virgin olive oil in large skillet on medium
Add beef strips to the extra virgin olive oil (it should sizzle sizzle baby)
Allow beef strips to cook for 5 ? 7 minutes or until beef is fully cooked
NOW LET?S MAKE THE BROCCOLI
Add frozen broccoli to a Pampered Chef Vegetable Steamer or medium pot with a cover
Add 1/3 cup of water to broccoli
If you are using the Pampered Chef Vegetable Steamer cover and place in microwave for 8 minutes or until broccoli is tender ? if you are using a medium pot with cover, put on stove and turn heat to medium/high cover but lift the cover just a little so a very small amount of steam can come out and cook for 10 minutes or until broccoli is tender
After broccoli is done, drain, and add unsalted butter and sea salt to taste
NOW LET?S PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Add broccoli, hoisin sauce, Catalina dressing and crushed garlic to the cooked beef and stir, cook for 8 ? 10 minutes and serve over the white rice.
ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY!

Alex Pelosi's Sundance debut has political angle

(AP) ? Alexandra Pelosi was beaming: She had just made her Sundance Film Festival debut with the HBO documentary "Fall from Grace," about former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey; her mother, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was on hand to witness it; and Sundance's founder and Pelosi's hero, Robert Redford, made it a point to stop by to witness the event.

"I'm 42 years old and finally made it to Sundance. This is the best day of my life ? it's downhill from here," she cracked.

That's highly unlikely. With the film set to make its debut on HBO on March 28 and the growing buzz around it, Pelosi is bound to have more celebratory moments for "Fall from Grace." It's her eighth HBO film: She's also done documentaries on homeless children, the tea party movement and Ted Haggard, the pastor who became ensnared in a drug and sex scandal.

"I'm drawn to broken men ? Why is that?" Pelosi pondered at a brunch Friday morning to celebrate the documentary. "I don't know. I'm really drawn to the recovering politician. . there's a lot of that in the film."

McGreevey was the governor of New Jersey and considered a rising Democratic star when he resigned in 2004 after it was revealed that McGreevey, then married with a child, was cheating on his wife with another man.

The scandal became a tabloid sensation, but after that, McGreevey came out as a gay man, trained in the seminary and started working with incarcerated women. The film follows McGreevey as he helps the women in prison and in their attempts to make the transition after their release.

"He's taken his own shame and turned it into something good, which most of the other fallen men don't do," she said, adding that a return to politics was unlikely for him: "He's too sincere."

McGreevey, who was also at the brunch with partner Mark O'Donnell, said he was initially reluctant to do a documentary about his life.

"I think my personal story had been told time and time again, but when Alexandra said she was willing to follow the women and get to know the women . it became something different," he said.

Pelosi spent so much time with McGreevey that her young children make cameo appearances in the film, and spent major holidays with McGreevey as he visited women in prison.

Nancy Pelosi recalled calling her daughter on Christmas to find out what the filmmaker's kids got for Christmas.

"She said, 'Mom I'm not going to tell you where I am right now,' and I said, 'Well, I think you are because you brought it up,'" the House Democratic minority leader recalled.

She was in prison with McGreevey: the younger Pelosi recalls her mother didn't take the news well, chastising her for not being home with her children, now 5 and 6.

"I thought, 'There's something more important than me and my kids,' and that's something I learned from Jim McGreevey," Pelosi said.

Pelosi said after that conversation with her mother, "I wasn't sure how supportive my mom was of the project ? until today."

The debut of the film marked a career pinnacle for Pelosi, a former NBC News journalist; having Redford appear at the film's premiere was an added bonus.

"Robert Redford was famous and could have retired after 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,'" she said, referencing one of his most famous films.

"But he kept working and his best work was in front of him, and if you ask me, Robert Redford's best work is Sundance because he makes everybody else's dream come true," she continued.

"He's using his fame for good, just like Jim McGreevey is using his shame for good."

World's best big wave surfers compete at Mavericks

(AP) ? As massive swells lumber across the Pacific toward Northern California, nearly two dozen of the world's best big wave surfers will be waiting to meet them Sunday a half-mile offshore at the infamous surfing break Mavericks.

For the first time since 2010, the Mavericks Invitational surf contest ? which requires wave faces of at least 20 feet ? will occur at the bone-crushing break that has claimed the lives of two expert big wave surfers.

Wave forecasters this week saw an excellent mixture of swell, wind, tide and sunny skies. Once the decision was made to run the contest, the call went out to the surfers, giving them a couple of days to pack their boards and wetsuits, and hop a plane.

Surfing the wave at Mavericks is a feat that takes athletic skill, experience and nerve.

The swells travel through deep water for five days before hitting a small, finger-like section of shallow reef that juts out into the sea.

When the swell meets the reef, the wave jumps upward and crashes back down with a fury, eventually washing through a section of craggy rocks.

The takeoff is often so steep that the surfers' big-wave "gun" surfboards leave the wave face, forcing the surfers to land near the bottom and make a quick turn before being pummeled by the wave's lip.

The spot ? named after the dog of Jeff Clark, who is credited with being the first to surf Mavericks ? has earned a nasty reputation. Mark Foo, a legendary big-wave surfer from Hawaii, died while surfing Mavericks in 1994. In 2011, another seasoned waterman, Sion Milosky, died there just weeks after another surfer nearly drowned.

This year's contest will be different: spectators are forbidden access to the beach or bluffs. After a large set of waves crashed into the crowd in 2010, injuring dozens, local officials barred crowds from congregating there.

Also, people congregating on the bluffs and along tide pools during previous contests caused environmental damage.

This year organizers have set up a festival at a nearby hotel, featuring a large screen that will broadcast the surfing live. The surfers will hold the awards ceremony there at the end of the contest.

The Coast Guard has issued a high surf advisory for the weekend, and is warning people throughout the region to watch for "sneaker waves" and other hazards.

Cal Football: Keenan Allen, Nick Forbes, Vince D'Amato Top Performers In 2012

Who were the top performers on offense, defense, or special teams for Cal last season? Keenan Allen, C.J. Anderson, Steve Williams, Nick Forbes, and Vince D'Amato seemed to achieve those honors for the California Golden Bears.

Who were your top performers on offense, defense and special teams this season and why?

Norcalnick, California Golden Blogs: On offense, Keenan Allen. Let's not kid ourselves, Keenan kept the offense respectable almost by himself, and things looked significantly uglier when he got hurt. There are some talented guys, but nobody in Keenan's league yet.

On defense, Nick Forbes. He was in the lineup and healthy all season, he showed versatility and discipline, and he threw in some big plays towards the end of the year.Chris McCain and Avery Sebastian might be better choices, but both missed time with injuries or didn't start the entire year, so I went with a more consistent impact player.

On special teams . . . well, uh, Vince D'Amato really did have a good year in the last 2/3rds of the season, so kudos to him. I think his 1st team all-conference selection says more about his contemporaries, but it's a nice honor for him either way.

Bears With Fangs:
Offense: Ok, so I'm going to say Keenan Allen. Let's get that out of the way. He was clearly the most talented player on the team and kept this offense afloat. There's very little argument against that. But I will propose readers should be seriously considering CJ Anderson. Despite Cal going with a two-back system, Anderson rushed for 790 yards despite only being given 126 carries. That's a 6.27 ypc, which is the best average for a runningback since Jahvid Best's ridiculous 2008 season. Anderson wasn't able to stay healthy for the entire season, but I have very little doubt in my mind that had the Bears been forced to ride CJA like your typical workhorse, the guy could have topped 1400 yards this year. Easily.

Defense: I was super impressed with Nick Forbes and saw the type of production I'd expect from a player who I had very high hopes for when we recruited him back in high school. The future is bright with that one. But you have to go with Steve Williams. The guy is the closest the Bears have had to a shutdown corner in a while and played very well despite being matched up against some talented receivers. It's a shame he didn't earn All Pac-12 honors (he got honorable mention, but that's like a pat on the back).

Special Teams: Bleh. I dunno, D'Amato? He was really good from Game 5 to Game 10. And then he fell off a bit. But kickoffs were solid, and he did kick a lot of field goals, so we'll say him, almost by default.

Myanmar activist, professor resigns over Brunei university ?censorship?

A Myanmar professor and human rights activist has resigned his post with one of Asia?s top universities, complaining of censorship.

Dr Maung Zarni, co-founder of the Free Burma Coalition, quit the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), saying it is ?impossible to maintain his professionalism? and blaming ?extreme and unprofessional academic censorship?.

Dr Maung Zarni, who is described on his website as a ?staunch advocate of unconditional human rights, as well as ethnic and gender equality,? is also a visiting fellow with the Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit at the London School of Economics, and the author of Life Under the Boot: 50 years of Military Dictatorship in Burma (Yale University Press).

On January 7, he uploaded his resignation letter on his website expressing his ?deep regret? at the situation. He says that last June he participated in a human rights and rule of law panel which was joined by Aung San Suu Kyi during her European trip.

He alleges UBD punished him by withdrawing financial and institutional support 24 hours before his flight to London and forced him to take personal leave and to pay for the US$3000 flight himself. He says UBD also warned him not to use the university?s name during LSE?s roundtable discussion and panels, and to be ?purely academic? ? ?[s]omething which, given the political role of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma, is entirely impossible,? he said.

Upon his return to UBD, he was warned that ?everyone is watching you?, and told to restrict his work to non-Myanmar issues or purely academic papers.

His resignation attracted some attention around the region, with Steve Lai, a presenter at Channel NewsAsia, tweeting: ?This makes me sad.? Similarly, Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim tweeted: ?Let the world know about the resignation of Dr Maung Zarni.?

Dr Maung Zarni said that he had never made any secret of his political and human rights activities.

?I simply could not countenance allowing my employer to intimidate me into professional silence on unfolding human rights atrocities and war crimes against Myanmar?s Muslims and ethnic minorities in Burma on account of a monthly pay check,? he said.

?In fact I am the only Burmese academic who is researching, publishing and speaking out against what the Organisation of the Islamic Conference/Cooperation (OIC) officially refers to as ?genocide against the Muslim Rohingya? in western Burma committed by the collaborating political and social forces, namely the Rakhine ?Buddhists? and the government of Burma itself,? Dr Maung Zarni added.

UBD had also shown displeasure at his writing on Myanmar?s transition for the National University of Singapore and being invited by Channel NewsAsia to debate democratisation in Myanmar.

?I feel that with Brunei taking over the chair of ASEAN, my ability to function in the immediate future with professional integrity will be compromised beyond the levels which I am prepared to accept,? he said.

In an interview with Mawkun magazine, Dr Zarni criticised Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for not taking a stand over Kachin, where, he said, the Kachin Independence Organisation is fighting not for an independent state but ?equal rights?.

He has accused the Tatmadaw of engaging in conflict in Kachin State so that Chinese projects could proceed, and said Myanmar people should be aware of China?s influence in their country.

The university did not respond to email requests for comment last week.

France: US helping support Mali operation

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? France's foreign minister said Sunday that the United States is providing communications and transport help for an international military intervention aimed at wresting Mali's north out of the hands of Islamist extremists.

Laurent Fabius said the three-day-old, French-led military operation has succeeded in halting the extremists' advance, which had prompted the intervention. He sought to stress that the operation is gaining international backing, despite concern about the risks of the mission in a stretch of lawless desert in weakly governed country.

"We have the support of the Americans for communications and transport," Fabius said on RTL radio Sunday. Britain, Denmark, and other European countries also are helping, Fabius said. He gave no details about the backup.

U.S. officials on Saturday said they had offered to send drones to Mali. British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to send aircraft to help transport troops.

Some 400 French troops have been deployed to Mali in the all-out effort to win back the territory from the well-armed rebels, who seized control of an area larger than France itself following a coup in Mali in March and made new advances last week.

Fabius said the military effort, including airstrikes by jets and combat helicopters on at least four towns, succeeded in blocking the advance.

"The Islamist offensive has been stopped," Fabius said. "Blocking the terrorists ... we've done it."

Residents of the city of Gao confirmed that the targets included the city's airport, as well as the building that served as the base for the town's feared Islamist police, who have carried out numerous punishments including the public amputations of accused thieves. The insurgents adhere to a harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

But the intervention has come with a human cost in the city of Konna, the first to be bombed Friday and Saturday. Mali presidential spokesman Ousmane Sy said 11 Malians were killed. The town's mayor, Sory Diakite, said the dead included three children who threw themselves into a river and drowned trying to avoid the falling bombs.

French President Francois Hollande authorized the military operation, code-named "Serval" for a sub-Saharan wildcat, after it became clear that the advancing rebels could push past defenses in the town of Mopti, the first town on the government-controlled side, which has the largest concentration of Malian soldiers.

The decision catapulted the world and Mali's neighbors into a military operation that diplomats had earlier said would not take place until at least September.

On Saturday, the body representing nations in West Africa announced that they would send hundreds of troops of their own, including at least 500 each from Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal, as well as from Nigeria.

NPR Homeowners Optimistic After Court Order - Real Estate India

??|?? January 12, 2013 ?? 03:20pm ??|Contributed by manoja

After the high court recently rejected an appeal against land acquisition for the Northern Peripheral Road (NPR), homebuyers and developers see a ray of hope for the much-delayed link road.

The owner of a cosmetic manufacturing unit had challenged the acquisition of her property that falls on the 18-kilometre-long expressway. Amid several pending litigations over the disputed four-kilometre-stretch of the road, also called Dwarka Expressway, the court had stayed construction on the patch.
Work on the remaining 14 kilometres has also been progressing at a snail?s pace.

A total of 276 house and plot owners had moved court after land acquisition notices were issued to them in 2008. About 20 farmers and other commercial establishments had also challenged the move.

On the other hand, more than 100 private developers have planned residential and commercial projects all along this expressway.

?The court order has set a precedent for other litigants and indicates that the state government would get a favourable decision in other cases as well. We hope the court would acknowledge the fact that the NPR project is in larger public interest,? said a homeowner who had booked a flat in sector 109.

The NPR, being developed under the public private partnership (PPP) model, will connect Dwarka with National Highway-8 at Kherki Daula and will pass Pataudi Road.
