(AP) ? Amazon.com Inc. says it has sold out of its Kindle Fire tablet computer amid expectations of a new model for the holiday season.

The Internet retailer has a major press conference scheduled for next Thursday in Santa Monica, Calif. It's widely expected to reveal a new model of the Fire there, so Thursday's announcement that the first model is "sold out" suggests that Amazon halted production a while ago to retool for a new model.

Amazon launched the $199 tablet last November. It was the first Kindle with a color screen and the ability to run third-party applications, placing it in competition with Apple Inc.'s iPad, at half the price of the cheapest iPad.

Amazon doesn't say how many Fires it has sold, but says it captured 22 percent of U.S. tablet sales over nine months. That would make it the second-most popular tablet, after the iPad. Tom Mainelli at research firm IDC said that figure matches his estimate of 6.7 million Fires sold, all in the U.S.

The Fire, which is about half the size of the iPad, could face a tougher challenge this holiday season. Many analysts expect Apple to introduce a smaller, cheaper iPad to take on the threat of the Kindle Fire and reach buyers who can't afford a full-sized iPad. In addition, Google just launched its own Kindle-sized tablet, the Nexus 7, and is selling it for $199.

Amazon kept the price of the Kindle Fire low by keeping it small, stripping it of features and taking a small or zero profit margin. Its strategy is to make the Fire a means for people to buy more e-books, music and movie downloads from the Amazon store, which is intimately linked to the device. That's a contrast to the strategy of Apple, which sees content sales as a sideline and wants to make a profit on every device sold.

Apple has sold more than 84 million iPads since its debut in 2010, contributing to strong quarterly earnings and a market valuation that has exceeded $625 billion ? the highest ever for a public company. The iPad 2, released in March 2011, sells for $399. The newest models, out this past March, sell for $499 to $829, depending on the amount of storage and wireless capabilities.

Amazon itself was the main outlet for the Kindle Fire. Its website now directs customers to used Fires available from other merchants. Staples stores recently sold it for $179. It wasn't immediately known whether some stores still had it on shelves.

Amazon could update the rest of its Kindle line at next week's event, too. The current models were launched a year ago. In the intervening time, competitor Barnes & Noble Inc. has launched a Nook e-reader with a built-in screen illuminator for reading in the dark.

ABI Research said Thursday that sales of dedicated e-readers, like the non-Fire, black-and-white Kindles, peaked last year. It expects worldwide sales of e-readers at 11 million in 2012, down from 15 million in 2011.

The research firm expects tablets to outsell e-readers 9 to 1 this year, despite costing four or five time as much. Still, e-readers won't go away completely, ABI analyst Joshua Flood said.

"We believe there will always be a niche market for the dedicated reading device for voracious readers, business travelers, and educational segments, particularly ones that are low-priced," Flood said.

Shares of Amazon, which is based in Seattle, fell $1.40, or 0.6 percent, to $245.72 in afternoon trading Thursday.

Asian markets fall as Tokyo hit by weak data

Asian markets fell on Friday as a weak set of Japanese economic figures sent Tokyo diving while dealers looked ahead to a speech by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke later in the day.

Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 index lost 143.87 points or 1.60 percent to 8,839.91 as concerns about the global economy pushed down Japanese steelmakers.

JFE Holdings dropped 4.9 percent to 988 yen and Nippon Steel shed 5.6 percent lower to 151 yen, a day after it announced a 120 billion yen ($1.53 billion) one-time loss from a writedown on two loss-making Japanese mills.

Consumer electronics giant Sharp fell 12.8 percent to 198 yen on uncertainty over a proposed tie-up with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision and a report that it had yet to start mass producing screens for Apple's new iPhone.

Meanwhile, Seoul edged down 0.07 percent, or 1.26 points, to 1,905.12 and Sydney nudged up 0.4 points to 4,316.1.

Hong Kong shed 0.36 percent, or 70.34 points, to close at 19,482.57 and Shanghai lost 0.25 percent, or 5.07 points, to 2,047.52.

There was fresh evidence that global headwinds were dragging on the Japanese recovery, with data showing factory output unexpectedly fell 1.2 percent in July, while the strong yen also hurt exporters.

"It was originally assumed that the weakness in April-May would be temporary and followed by a rebound in summer. But such a scenario clearly fell through," said Tatsushi Shikano, senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.

Adding to the woes in the key European market and uncertainty in the United States are growing fears about a slowdown in Asia, with shipments to China, South Korea and Singapore among those seeing big falls.

Other figures Friday showed Japanese consumer prices were down 0.3 percent on-year in July, the third consecutive monthly fall, while unemployment was flat at 4.3 percent.

Earlier this month data revealed a much worse-than-expected trade deficit in July of 517.4 billion yen ($6.5 billion).

Attention is mostly focused on Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where Bernanke will address central bankers later in the day, with investors hoping he will announce plans for a new round of stimulus to kick-start the world's biggest economy.

But a slew of data in recent days suggesting a slow and steady US recovery -- including rebounding consumer spending -- has been interpreted as a sign he will hold off on further stimulus.

The Dow fell 0.81 percent, the S&P 500 slid 0.78 percent and the Nasdaq 1.05 percent.

Also weighing on sentiment was a sharp drop in eurozone business and consumer confidence and a fifth straight monthly rise in German unemployment.

Also in Europe, France and Spain called for decisive action to curb crippling borrowing rates that are threatening Madrid and pushing it towards seeking a full bailout.

French President Francois Hollande, who is in Spain to meet Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, prodded European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi to act, as the central bank works on plans to restart a bond-buying scheme aimed at helping under-pressure economies.

The ECB is expected to give more details on the mechanism for any intervention by September 6.

In Seoul electronics giant Samsung rose 1.48 percent after a Japanese court ruled that it had not stolen technologies from Apple, dealing a blow to the iPhone maker a week after it won a $1 billion case in the United States.

On currency markets the euro bought $1.2520 and 98.26 yen, compared with $1.2504 and 98.26 yen in New York late Thursday. The dollar was trading at 78.50 yen against 78.59 yen.

Oil was higher, with New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in October gaining 39 cents to $95.01 a barrel in the late afternoon and Brent North Sea crude for October adding 52 cents to $113.17.

Gold was at $1,658.30 by 0825 GMT compared with $1,655.30 on Thursday.

In other markets:

-- Taipei rose 0.35 percent, or 25.62 points, to 7,397.06.

Smartphone maker HTC rose 1.78 percent to Tw$258.0 while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company was 0.73 percent higher at Tw$83.3.

-- Manila closed 0.91 percent higher, adding 46.88 points to 5,196.19.

Alliance Global Group rose 0.34 percent to 11.78 pesos and Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. fell 2.62 percent to 91.05 pesos.

-- Wellington rose 1.02 percent, or 37.12 points, to 3,666.68.

Air New Zealand gained 7.39 percent to NZ$1.09 and Telecom gained 2.07 percent to NZ$2.46.

-- Kuala Lumpur was closed for a public holiday.

Families face grim wait in the dark as Isaac grinds on

Storm-weary residents hunkered down for a hot, wet and windy wait on Wednesday as Hurricane Isaac slowed to storm force but looked set to linger over southern Louisiana.

Officials urged residents to stay indoors and warned it would be at least a day before winds calmed enough for crews to try to repair downed power lines.

Dozens of people who refused to heed mandatory evacuation orders were trapped by flood waters after a massive storm surge rolled water over the levees protecting low-lying Plaquemines Parish overnight.

Some 118 people were rescued by midday and 25 more were still waiting on their rooftops in the pouring rain and pounding winds, parish president Billy Nungesser told reporters.

About 350 people were crammed into three emergency shelters in the coastal parish south of New Orleans and officials were working on opening a fourth shelter as Isaac continued to pound this low-lying coastal area.

Claude Jones, 61, was trying to nap on a cot in the high school gymnasium without much luck.

He'd been there two nights already and with his trailer in Empire likely totally destroyed by the storm surge he could be here for many, many more.

"I'm worried about my family," he told AFP. "My cousin's still down there and they say they can't rescue him because the weather's so bad."

Keeping the kids occupied has been exhausting, said 34-year-old Kylie Polk.

"It's hard. I'm just so ready to go home. I'll be glad when this storm do what it's going to do."

But Polk was counting her blessings. She's pretty sure her home will survive the storm, unlike some of her family members who live on the wrong side of the levees.

"I just feel so sorry for them, starting all over again," she told AFP.

Isaac was a relatively weak Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall late Tuesday, but it still packed a punch.

Trees were torn out of the rain-soaked earth, roofs were ripped off and streets were littered with debris.

Nearly half a million people were out of power after lines were knocked down. Officials warned that many downed lines remained live and posed deadly hazards for anyone who set foot in the wrong puddle.

Governor Bobby Jindal said he had unconfirmed reports that one person had died in a house fire triggered by flooding, but the casualty toll was limited.

Since flooding triggered by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which saw 1,800 people killed on the Gulf Coast, New Orleans has built a multi-billion dollar system of levees, pumping stations and drainage channels.

Research students from the the University of Alabama measure wind speeds as Hurricane Isaac makes landfall, Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012, in New Orleans, La. Isaac was packing 80 mph winds, making it a Category 1 hurricane. It came ashore early Tuesday near the mouth of the Mississippi River, driving a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland and soaking a neck of land that stretches into the Gulf. The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with the its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

(AP) ? Hurricane Isaac sidestepped New Orleans on Wednesday, sending the worst of its howling wind and heavy rain into a cluster of rural fishing villages that had few defenses against the slow-moving storm that could bring days of unending rain.

Isaac arrived exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city's fortified levee system easily handled the assault.

The city's biggest problems seemed to be downed power lines, scattered tree limbs and minor flooding. Just one person was reported killed, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew just to be sure.

But in Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over an 18-mile levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall to relieve the strain.

"I'm getting text messages from all over asking for help," said Joshua Brockhaus, an electrician who was rescuing neighbors in his boat. "I'm dropping my dogs off, and I'm going back out there."

By midafternoon, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm. The Louisiana National Guard wrapped up rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, saying they felt confident they had gotten everyone out and there were no serious injuries but would stay in the area over the coming days to help, National Guard spokesman Capt. Lance Cagnolatti said.

Isaac's maximum sustained winds had decreased to 60 mph by Wednesday evening. Even at its strongest, Isaac was far weaker than Hurricane Katrina, which crippled New Orleans in 2005. Because Isaac's coiled bands of rain and wind were moving at only 5 mph ? about the pace of a brisk walk ? the threat of storm surges and flooding was expected to last into a second night as the immense comma-shaped system crawled across Louisiana.

"We didn't think it was going to be like that," Brockhaus said. "The storm stayed over the top of us. For Katrina, we got 8 inches of water. Now we have 13 feet."

In Plaquemines Parish, about two dozen people who defied evacuation orders needed to be rescued. The stranded included two police officers whose car became stuck.

"I think a lot of people were caught with their pants down," said Jerry Larpenter, sheriff in nearby Terrebonne Parish. "This storm was never predicted right since it entered the Gulf. It was supposed to go to Florida, Panama City, Biloxi, New Orleans. We hope it loses its punch once it comes in all the way."

The storm knocked out power to as many as 700,000 people, stripped branches off trees and flattened fields of sugar cane so completely that they looked as if a tank had driven over them.

Plaquemines Parish ordered a mandatory evacuation for the west bank of the Mississippi below Belle Chasse because of worries about a storm surge. The order affected about 3,000 people, including a nursing home with 112 residents. In Jefferson Parish, the sheriff ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

West of New Orleans in St. John the Baptist Parish, flooding from Isaac forced 1,500 people to evacuate. And Gov. Bobby Jindal's office said thousands in the area needed to evacuate. Rising water closed off all main thoroughfares into the parish, and in many areas, water lapped up against houses and left cars stranded.

After wind-driven water spilled over the levee in Plaquemines Parish, state officials said they would cut a hole in it as soon as weather allowed and equipment could be brought to the site.

In coastal Mississippi, wildlife officers used small motorboats Wednesday to rescue at least two dozen people from a neighborhood Isaac flooded in Pearlington.

Back in New Orleans, the storm canceled remembrance ceremonies for those killed by Katrina. Since that catastrophe, the city's levee system has been bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements. The bigger, stronger levees were tested for the first time by Hurricane Gustav in 2008.

Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Rachel Rodi said the flood-control measures were working "as intended" during Isaac.

"We don't see any issues with the hurricane system at this point," she said.

Isaac came ashore late Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane, with 80 mph winds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It drove a wall of water nearly 11 feet high inland.

In Vermilion Parish, a 36-year-old man died after falling 18 feet from a tree while helping friends move a vehicle ahead of the storm. Deputies did not know why he climbed the tree.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas. But every system is different.

"It's totally up to the storm," said Ken Graham, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Slidell, La.

Slashing rain and wind gusts up to 100 mph buffeted New Orleans skyscrapers.

In the French Quarter near Bourbon Street, Jimmy Maiuri was shooting video from outside his second-floor apartment. Maiuri, who fled from Katrina at the last minute, stayed behind this time with no regrets. He was amazed at the storm's timing.

"It's definitely not one to take lightly, but it's not Katrina," he said. "No one is going to forget Aug. 29, forever. Not here at least."

As hard wind and heavy rain pelted Melba Leggett-Barnes' home in the Lower 9th Ward, an area leveled during Katrina, she felt more secure than she did seven years ago.

"I have a hurricane house this time," said Barnes, who has been living in her newly rebuilt home since 2008. She and her husband, Baxter Barnes, were among the first to get a home through Brad Pitt's Make It Right program.

Her yellow house with a large porch and iron trellis was taking a beating but holding strong.

"I don't have power, but I'm all right," said Barnes, a cafeteria worker for the New Orleans school system.

In Mississippi, some sections of the main highway that runs along the Gulf, U.S. 90, were closed by flooding.

In Pass Christian, a Mississippi coastal community wiped out by hurricanes Camille and Katrina, Mayor Chipper McDermott was optimistic that Isaac would not deal a heavy blow.

"It's not too bad, but the whole coast is going to be a mess," he said.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend.

the red kitchen: Meet Olivia (the fish)

Everybody, meet Olivia (the fish).

He's white and orange and he came home with us in a bag.
Olivia (the girl) and Olivia (the fish) hit it off right away.
We bought him a vase for 45 cents at the thrift store, some pebbles from the dollar store, and a fake plant from the pet store. ?We also got him some water treatment stuff and some goldfish flakes.

Here he is acclimating to our room temperature (and appropriately treated) tap water from the comfort of his plastic bag.

When we let him loose later he even charmed us with his mad hide-and-go-seek skills.

So, we bought a fish today. ?Guess who named it.

Bryan doesn't know yet that we got it. ?Although, in all fairness, I did warn him the other day that I was thinking about buying a fish. ?

The truth is, I've tried to talk Bryan into buying a fish several times since we got married. ?I've succeeded a couple times, but the fish always dies a day or two later and then Bryan goes back to his?Scrooge-y ways. ?So I may have gone to buy the fish without him on purpose. ?Heh heh...

I had actually planned on buying a beta fish. ?I had a couple of beta fish (one at a time) for a while in high school and college and they were pretty hearty. ?My beta fish named Jackson was one that I got during my junior year of high school and it lasted all the way through my sophomore year of college. ?

He even?survived?enjoyed a couple of trips on the airplane with me. ?He rode in my old Nalgene water bottle. ?And, yes, it was after the airlines were super strict about taking liquids on airplanes. ?Luckily the airport security figured that if I had a live fish actually swimming around in the water then it probably wasn't a bomb. ?(Side note: It wasn't a bomb. ?Score one for airport security using some good old common sense.)

Anyway, since Bryan and I got married the only fish we've ever had have been super cheapo goldfish. ?You know, the kind that they sell for 17 cents each that are really only meant to be sold as food for other fish. ?Man, whatevs. ?Goldfish are real fish too. ?(Though, admittedly, they do have a rather short shelf life.)

But, ahem, you may have noticed that Olivia (the fish) is not a beta fish. ?He's a goldfish. ?Partly we got him because he's so cute. ?

Also we got him because they were out of the cheap beta fish when Olivia (the girl) and I went to the pet store today. ?I had spent the whole trip to the pet store telling her how we were going to get a fish to bring home and after we found the fish we wanted wasn't available today she was getting pretty sad when I told her we'd have to go back another day.?

So instead I totally caved and bought a 17 cent goldfish instead. ?The new shipment of cheap beta fish comes in on Thursday, so I figured Olivia (the goldfish) could hopefully survive until then and then if he's still alive we'll just keep him instead of getting a beta fish. ?If he doesn't make it until Thursday, we'll go get a beta fish. ?Sentimental, I know.

But actually I did want a fish for sentimental reasons. ?Olivia (the girl) is starting preschool next week and she'll be gone almost as much as if she were in half day kindergarten. ?My heart is saying "Yahoo!" and "Boo hoo," all at the same time. ?I'm excited for all the free time to be able to focus on things and hopefully be really productive. ?But I'm not excited for the?loneliness?that may set in. ?So I thought I'd make sure I'm not the only living thing in the house when she's away. ?Hence, the new addition. ?

Obviously Olivia (the fish) isn't as friendly and cuddly as a dog or something, but we're not allowed to have pets (other than fish) and, anyway, I really am not interested in all the fur all over my stuff. ?And I had fish a lot when I was growing up, so, despite my realistic views on the lifeline of the common goldfish, I am a little sentimental about them.

Here's to hoping Olivia (the fish) doesn't die before tomorrow morning and I have lots of fun?frolicking?through the woods together and working on sewing projects while Olivia (the girl) is busy having the time of her life at preschool. ?:)

Afghanistan says Badruddin Haqqani is dead

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani network was been killed in an airstrike in Pakistan, Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Sunday, providing the first public confirmation of rumors that have been swirling for days about the key member of a militant group the U.S. considers one of the most dangerous in the region.

The Taliban rejected reports of Badruddin Haqqani's death, however, saying that he was alive and well in Afghanistan.

Haqqani's death would be a serious blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group, which has ties to both the Taliban and al-Qaida, has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, particularly in and around the capital city of Kabul, and poses perhaps the biggest threat to stability in the country.

Shafiqullah Tahiri, the spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security intelligence agency, said Haqqani was killed last week in an airstrike in Pakistan. He did not provide any further details, and would not say what information the agency's operatives were basing their conclusion on.

U.S. officials have declined comment on the reports.

But Tahiri's account is similar to one provided Saturday by a senior Taliban leader who said Haqqani was killed in a drone strike. It also hews closely to a version provided by Pakistani officials who said Saturday that they were 90 percent sure the militant commander was killed in a missile attack Tuesday in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.

The Taliban, who are closely allied with the Haqqani network, rejected all reports of Haqqani's death.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.

"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email to reporters late Saturday. "Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy."

In a telephone call with The Associated Press on Sunday Mujahid again maintained that Haqqani was alive.

The territory where the American drone strikes generally occur are in Pakistan's remote and dangerous tribal regions, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death. And the U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.

The al-Qaida-allied Haqqani tribe runs a mafia-like smuggling operation and occasionally turns to terrorism with the aim of controlling its territory in eastern Afghanistan. The Haqqanis use Pakistani towns to plan, train and arm themselves with guns and explosives, cross into Afghanistan to attack NATO and Afghan forces, then retreat back across the border to safety.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. Tahiri said that Haqqani's responsibilities included arranging foreign suicide bombers, maintaining relations with other insurgent groups, recruiting Pakistani Taliban fighters for the Haqqani group and overseeing operations in southeastern Afghanistan and in Kabul.

"He was the mastermind of the organized suicide attacks in Kabul," Tahiri said, referring to a number of high-profile strikes in the Afghan capital targeting everything from hotels to Western embassies. Every time there has been a highly complex attack in Kabul involving coordination between multiple insurgents, American officials have pointed the finger at the Haqqanis.

In the latest such attack in June, gunmen stormed a lakeside hotel outside of Kabul and opened fire on Afghans having dinner, killing 18 people. The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan quickly attributed the attack to the Haqqani network, which has long operated as a sort of arm of the Taliban in the eastern part of the country.

Still, there are likely people waiting in the wings to replace Badruddin, said former Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh, now an opposition leader.

"They are going to find another person to replace him. What I know is that his elder brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is playing a larger role in the Haqqani network," Saleh said in an interview on Afghanistan's Tolo television. He said until the group's ability to operate across Afghanistan and Pakistan is limited, "killing their commanders or leaders will have its effect, but not that large of an effect."

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

Israeli police arrest suspects in firebomb attack

(AP) ? Israeli police say they have arrested three Jewish youths from a West Bank settlement as suspects in firebomb attack that wounded six Palestinians in a taxi.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Sunday the three suspects were minors, aged 12-13. They will appear in a Jerusalem court to face charges.

The attack 10 days ago targeted a taxi driving in the West Bank. A firebomb struck the vehicle, injuring the six people inside, one seriously. The military suspected Jewish extremists.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders condemned the firebombing.

Extremist Israeli settlers often attack Palestinians and their property as part of a campaign they call the "price tag," retaliation for either army action against settlers or Palestinian attacks.

NFL player calls officials 'Three Stooges'

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray is neither a fan of replacement refs nor timely references.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Gray yelled at the refs and called them "the Three Stooges" during the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The replacement officials were in the midst of a 16-penalty game, including eight in a messy fourth quarter. They did manage to avoid ear pulls, head knocks and eye gouges.

It was another disastrous effort from the replacements. Wyatt said there was miscommunication about the number of timeouts Arizona had left and at least three instances where the referee misidentified a penalized player. On one of those occasions, the player wasn't even on the field.

There are seven officials on the field for NFL games, so it's not immediately clear whether Gray was specifically identifying three slapsticky zebras or whether he was so angry that he didn't care about numerically accurate insults.

"I think they just got a little sloppy at the end," head coach Mike Munchak said of the refs after the game, avoiding a Marx Brothers reference. "It seemed like nothing was called most of the game and then all of a sudden there's a lot of calls."

As for that penalty called on the guy who wasn't on the field? Chris Berman has no idea what all the fuss is about.

Rogers Communications buying Score Media for ... - Financial Post

TORONTO ? Rogers Communications Inc. is acquiring Score Media Inc. for $167-million, snapping up the country?s third and smallest all-sports english-language television network and adding some heft to its own sports broadcast properties.

With consolidation sweeping the broadcast sector, The Score has been a long-rumoured takeout candidate. By adding the Toronto-based network, a popular channel catering to younger male audiences, the deal better positions Rogers? Sportsnet channels to challenge and potentially overtake TSN, the top-performing sports property in the country owned by arch-competitor BCE Inc.

?We continue to pursue opportunities to engage, expand and enhance the experience for sports fans? Keith Pelley, chief of media at the Toronto-based conglomerate said in a statement released Saturday. ?Score is a tremendous sports service that offers a distinct flavour of premium, niche programming that fits squarely within our strategy.?

The Score?s television network serves as the earnings engine for the firm, generating a steady stream of TV ad and subscriber revenues. But while still churning out decent financial results, the network has come under sustained pressure from digital incursions and being squeezed by larger competitors.

BCE?s acquisition last year of TSN through its purchase of the CTV network ignited a programming arms race between Bell and Rogers, resulting in The Score losing portions of its broadcast schedule.

?We need to sort of reinvent ourselves,? Jonathan Savage, head of marketing, said in a June interview. ?We still negotiate, we still get live games ? but it is an extremely difficult market, for sure.?

The media company had $12.7-million in revenue in the latest quarter while swinging to modest loss of 2 cents a share.

Rogers said it is acquiring Score Media?s broadcast network, but not the smaller company?s digital assets, which include thescore.com and a promising mobile app business. ? an area analysts say could generates significant revenue in the future.

Instead, the digital division will be spun out to Score?s existing shareholders ahead of the deal?s close, with Rogers gaining a 10% interest in the digital media business. Rogers , the country?s largest wirelss provider by subscribers, will also have access to Score Media?s digital technology to ?immediately enhance its mobile offerings.?

Cash flow from the TV unit has been used to fund the potentially more lucrative app business, with the company?s ad-supported ScoreMobile among the most popular downloads across the Canadian, U.S. and U.K markets, streaming game results and other data to rabid sports fans? smartphones.

The exclusion of the digital assets came as a surprise to some, although the unit has been a historical loss maker, management expects sales of ads on the app to ramp up substantially next year ? a trajectory Rogers could well have accelerated.

?For someone like Rogers, they would be able to leverage that incredibly quickly,? Scott Rattee, analyst at Stonecap Securities said. ?All they need to do is back it up with sales support. I?m sure they?d be able to fill the advertising inventory they?ve got so much quicker.?

Score?s mobile apps, which are downloaded onto BlackBerry, Android and iPhone devices, are expected to pull in 2.2 billion page views this year? a record ? more than half from the United States, where the company has recently established a sales team.

The TV network has been a rumoured takeover target for years, however with BCE?s acquisition of CTV, the probability intensified. Sources say the network retained bankers at CIBC in January to formally shop the company, but found no buyers at the price it was after.

?[Founder] John Levy had a multiple in mind that was just off the charts,? one source close to the company said.

Company owners are believed to have originally been seeking upwards of $200-million.

The bid, which is expected to clear scrutiny from broadcast and competition regulators, is the latest in flurry of acquisitions of television assets by telecom giants in the last 24 months. Beginning with Shaw Communications Inc.?s purchase of the Global television network and Canwest specialty channels in late 2010, virtually every major broadcast asset in the country has been snapped up under Shaw, BCE or Rogers.

This week, BCE and Rogers closed on the acquisition of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs as well as broadcast channels like Leafs TV. Regulators at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission meanwhile are preparing to review BCE?s $3.38-billion bid for Astral Media Inc.

Anorexics Can't Judge Own Body Size: Study - Health Nutrition and ...

But they can size up others accurately, researchers noted.

THURSDAY, Aug. 23 (HealthDay News) ? People with the eating disorder anorexia have difficulty judging their own body size but are able to size up others accurately, a small new study finds.

The study included 25 people with anorexia and 25 people without the disorder who were shown a door-like opening and asked to judge whether they or other people in the room could pass through it.

In earlier experiments, people with anorexia felt they could not pass through the door even if it was easily wide enough. In this study, people with anorexia were more accurate at judging whether other people could fit through the door than whether they could.

The researchers also found a link between the anorexia patients? ability to fit through the door and their body size prior to becoming anorexic. This suggests that people with anorexia may still think of themselves as having their previous size, said study author Dewi Guardia, of the University Hospital of Lille in France.

The study was published Aug. 22 in the journal PLoS One.

My Brain is Akin From This Stuff ? Life in the Boomer Lane

It?s tough to know which is of more concern at the moment, the fact that at least two elected officials have no knowledge of a woman?s anatomy, or that Mattel has created Drag Queen Barbie.

Rep Todd Akin, a Republican Senator from Missouri, in a statement that set knowledge of human reproduction back about 50,000 years, said, ?From what I understand from doctors (pregnancy from rape) is really rare.? If it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.?

When asked to define ?that whole thing,??Akin became very quiet for a while and then replied, ?You know, that thing, that thing that happens when a Mommy and Daddy love each other and their love is so big that it creates a baby.? How can that happen if the Mommy and Daddy don?t love each other?? It can?t.? It makes no sense.?

American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer, agrees with Akin and defended him on his radio show.? The right-wing host claimed that Akin is correct and went even farther than the Missouri Republican to explain:

?What Todd Akin is talking about is when you?ve got a real, genuine rape. A case of forcible rape, a case of assault, where a woman has been violated against her will through the use of physical force where it is physically traumatic for her, under those circumstances, the woman?s body ? because of the trauma that has been inflicted on her ? it may interfere with the normal function processes of her body that lead to conception and pregnancy.?

In further explanation, Fischer said, ?Take my wife, for example.? She says women have magic powers and that they can get pregnant or not, depending on what they want.? I believe her because we have several children, and I haven?t put my wee wee into her hoo hah since the day we got married.?

Mike Huckabee, in another statement of solidarity, has also chimed in on Akin?s behalf, claiming that forcible rapes have created ?extraordinary? people. ?I know it happens,? Huckabee stated. ?And yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, those people are able to do extraordinary things.?

When asked to elaborate, Huckabee explained, ?Look, we all know about Jesus, right?? Well, Joseph and Mary weren?t married, and Mary was a good girl, so it?s clear to me that Joseph must have forced Mary to do it, right?? But look what resulted: Jesus!? Which is like the greatest thing that ever happened to every single person on the planet!?

When reminded that Jesus was the son of God and not of Joseph, Huckabee backtracked. ?Right,? he said.? ?Yikes, I totally forgot.? God can make people pregnant.? That?s what my wife must always mean when she says I?m expendable.?

Akin, Fischer and Huckabee are now collaborating on a sex manual for young people.?

Akin explained: ?We get together a lot, like every day, to talk about sex and stuff like that.? So we thought, hey, why not give everyone the benefit of what we know? Like if you have sex during a full moon, you will definitely get pregnant.? And if you raise your arms over your head when you are pregnant, the umbilical cord will wrap around the baby?s neck.?

?Don?t forget about the short skirt thing,? Huckabee reminded him.

?Right, the short skirt thing.? No short skirts.? Ever.? You are really asking for it, then. A man can do whatever he wants to you and you are a slut and you deserve it.?

?What if you wear a short skirt when you are already pregnant??

?I think the baby can fall out, but I?m not sure. We still have some hands on research to do on that one.?

Could Casual Gambling Replace Casual Gaming? - Online Casino Archives

It seems that more and more casual games companies are turning towards online gambling in order to boost revenues. Over the last few weeks there have been announcements from a number of companies about forthcoming gambling products.

A large number of casual game developers are looking to online gambling as a way of boosting revenues and expanding their clientele.

Big Fish Games, based in Seattle, has announced that it will be offering U.K. based players the chance to make real bets on the new version of Big Fish Casino iPhone app. While players in the U.S. won?t yet be able to enjoy this new feature, American regulators are steadily progressing towards a legal and regulated online gambling system and Big Fish will be poised to take advantage of the market when it opens up.

The London based company Betable has started offering a service which allows casual game developers the chance to make money through legal online gambling. Betable handles the security, transactions, identity verification for a share of the gambling revenues. All game developers have to do is connect their games into the Betable system. This system allows U.S. developers to collect money from legal U.K. based online gambling.

Another company to venture into online gambling is 3G studios based in Reno, Nevada. The company has hired around 80 new contractors in India and China and is expected to have 200 employees dedicated to making gambling games by the end of this year. Early this year Nevada began accepting applications for online gambling licenses and last June Delaware became the first state to allow online casino gambling for state residents. There are a few more states considering following Delaware?s example.

Finally Zynga is also looking at online gambling after purchasing Double Down Interactive, one of Facebook?s popular virtual casinos, earlier this year. It is expected that mobile gambling could result in $100 billion worth of bets by 2017.? With so much money at stake, it seems gambling could soon be a part of the most casual of games.

HP exceeds Q3 expectations: rakes $29.7 billion in revenue, still posts a loss

HP announces Q3 earningsTo say that HP is in a bit of a transitional period would probably be an understatement. As expected, the $8 billion hit it took over the EDS purchase severely impacted its bottom line. While revenue was down year-over-year to $29.7 billion, that five percent drop equated to a 568 percent decline in income as the company posted a loss of $8.9 billion. If not for the combined $10.8 billion in charges it was forced to absorb this quarter, the company's net-income would have stood at $2 billion -- which would have been a significant improvement over Q2's $1.6 billion in profit. While such a staggering loss does appear bad, the non-GAAP results should give investors some hope, as the merger and layoff related charges are a one-time deal. Still, the outlook continues to be grim at the Personal Systems Group which has seen revenue drop 10 percent over the last year. The lone bright spot in the company's line up appears to be its software division, where revenue has grown 18 percent year-over-year. CEO Meg Whitman issued a statement alongside the Q3 2012 earnings report looking to assuage nervous investors' fears. "HP is still in the early stages of a multi-year turnaround, and we're making decent progress despite the headwinds," she asserts and assures that better days lie ahead. Carphone Warehouse launches Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Android Central

A little after it made its worldwide debut in New York City, UK retailer the Carphone Warehouse has announced that it's now selling the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 online and in stores across the country. Prices start at £399.99 for the Wifi-only version, going up to £499.99 for the Wifi and 3G model.

That's no small amount of money, but if you want the best stylus experience you can get on a tablet, with Samsung's Wacom-powered S Pen, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is the only place you'll be able to get it. For more on the Note 10.1, be sure to check out our full preview of the device from last week's launch event in New York City.

Carphone also sends word that until this Thursday, Aug. 24, it's offering the original Galaxy Note smartphone for free on £21 per month contracts with T-Mobile UK. No prizes for guessing why the retailer might want to burn through the last of its original Galaxy Note stock before next week...
