How 'Hatfields and McCoys' became cable's biggest-ever hit

The History Channel miniseries 'Hatfields and McCoys' is the most-watched non-sports show ever on cable. Yes, it's violent and vulgar, but it's also good, movie-style entertainment, critics say.?

The History Channel has put the violent ?Hatfields and McCoys? on the cultural map with its three-night, six-hour miniseries event ending Wednesday.?

But the show has also sent a shot across the larger television landscape with its stunning ratings its first two nights. According to early Nielsen numbers released by the network, some 13.9 million viewers tuned in Monday and 13.1 million on Tuesday, making it the first and second largest non-sport audiences ever for a basic cable show.?

Put another way, NBC?s ?America?s Got Talent? ? a show that has consistently performed as the summer?s top-rated program and this year is drawing fresh attention for its new judge, Howard Stern ? is drawing 10 million viewers.

?For a basic cable show to trounce the summer?s number one program is a big deal in the television world,? says Matt Whitfield, features editor of Yahoo! Entertainment. Expect not just a few knock-offs, he adds, but ?any studio with a western or historical miniseries idea gathering dust on a shelf will give them another look.??

As the broadcast networks have increasingly relied on comedies and reality shows, cable has been leading the way into high-production value series, with big-name stars and budgets, beginning with HBO?s ?The Sopranos.? Since then, AMC?s ?Mad Men,? TNT?s ?The Closer,? and Showtime?s ?The Tudors? have continued to escalate the trend. Showtime?s ?The Borgias,? starred Jeremy Irons and the recently canceled racing drama ?Luck? was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Dustin Hoffman.?

HBT: Francona sending sexy texts to young woman?

This is a pretty darn Deadspin story, but since it comes from Deadspin, I suppose it?s understandable. If it?s not your bag, move along.

Upshot: the separated Terry Francona has been sending ?sexy? texts to a much younger woman. ?Sexy? is in quotes because most people really wouldn?t consider a pic of Terry Francona with his shirt off and a towel wrapped around him, his bald head glistening in the sun to be ?sexy.?

That aside, the boyfriend of the woman found it while apparently raiding her email. He then found a cleavage pic his girlfriend sent back to Tito and a bunch of texts they exchanged and sent it all on to Deadspin, who published the pics because that?s what Deadspin does. Ah, true love.

The takeaways:

  • I?m not gonna get on Francona for this AT ALL. Dude is single and can do what he wants. He probably doesn?t know the woman has a boyfriend anyway. ?Indeed,?I actually find him almost adorable in a ?poor recently-single guy has no clue whatsoever how to do the sexy texting thing with someone? way. Which in some ways I can relate to, sadly, even if I never did anything sad/funny like that since the ex and I split up. I don?t think so, anyway. Gotta ask my girlfriend about that.
  • The girlfriend: It?s hard to approve of someone in a relationship texting stuff like that to some other dude, but what she does is between her and her God, I guess;
  • But even if that?s wrong, isn?t this boyfriend a jerk for raiding his girlfriend?s email and texts and sending it on to a gossip site like Deadspin? ?What is wrong with people? Maybe he?s being done wrong in the whole Terry Francona triangle, but if he doesn?t respect anyone?s privacy, he probably was gonna screw up and get dumped eventually.

Anyway: here?s to young love. And to older, bald, recently split dudes getting together with attractive young women. My name is Craig Calcaterra and I approve of that message.

21st century bloodletting reduces cardiovascular risk

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? It seems that while the practice of bloodletting throughout history had little or no effect on most diseases, and the practice was abandoned in the 19th century, new research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine demonstrates that blood donation has real benefits for obese people with metabolic syndrome. Two sessions of bloodletting were enough to improve blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease.

Metabolic syndrome is the name given to a host of difficulties affecting people who are obese. This includes insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension and leads to an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Since it is known that accumulation of iron in the body is also associated with hypertension and diabetes researchers from Berlin and University Duisburg-Essen randomly assigned patients with metabolic syndrome into two groups, those undergoing iron reduction by phlebotomy and controls.

The iron-reduction patients had 300ml of blood removed at the start of the trial and between 250 and 500ml removed four weeks later. Six weeks later, allowing plenty of time for blood volume to be replaced, the patients who gave blood had a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (from 148 mmHg to 130 mmHg) as well as reduction in blood glucose levels and heart rate, and an improvement in cholesterol levels (LDL/HDL ratio).

Prof Andreas Michalsen from the Charit?-University Medical Centre, Berlin, who led this research explained, "Consecutive reduction in iron stores was able to improve markers of cardiovascular risk and glycemic control. Consequently blood donation may prevent not just diabetes but also cardiovascular disease for the obese. Obviously this treatment will not be suitable for people with anemia however for those eligible for treatment blood donation may prevent escalation of their condition."

Groaning for Adoption ? Bear Creek United Methodist Church

David Orendorff???????? Romans 8:22-27????????? May 27, 2012

Paul presents us two images of the world groaning in hope for the children of God to bring a new creation. The first is of a woman groaning in labor. I have been in the delivery room for three births. I consider it a great privilege to have been there for the miracle of new life. But I am also well aware of what it means to groan in labor. The only thing that keeps the mother from ending the pregnancy or murdering those attending her is the anticipated child who will hopefully soon enter the world. Without the hope of the child, the groaning is unbearable. And many a mother, after her first or even second childbirth, has said, ?I am never doing that again!? But then the hope of a child again moves in her and, knowing full well the groaning that must come, she does it again. Such, says Paul, is the creation?s suffering in hope as it waits for the children of God to enter the world to bring the new creation.

Paul?s second image of groaning in suffering while hoping for a new creation is that of waiting to be adopted. In 2010, the most recent statistics I could find, there were 10,068 children in foster care in Washington State; 2,167 of these children were waiting for adoptive families. Imagine you are one of those two thousand waiting for a family to find you. Typically you are nine years old and have been removed from your biological family because a court has found your parents unfit and there is no one in your family to whom you can be entrusted. Your median stay in any one home will be 14 months. You have a one-in-ten chance of being physically or emotionally abused. And even though you are only nine, you are in your second, if not third, home.[1]

And so, day in and day out, you suffer being a guest in a home not yours; you suffer being a child of temporary and hired care; you suffer not knowing if today you will be moved to another foster home. There are a great many very good foster parents, and I have been privileged to know some. But even the best foster parent is only temporary, and that uncertainty is devastating to a child who has been pulled from their biological family and is on a day- to-day basis with a temporary family.

As a child hoping for adoption, day in and day out, you groan in prayer that some loving family will find you and offer you the fullness a home can be, all the time knowing that the older you get the less likely you will be found. So you groan and you pray and you hope for what might be but is not yet seen; you groan and hope for the day of adoption and redemption. Such groaning, says Paul, is the creation?s suffering as it waits for the children of God to enter the world to bring a new creation. We are the children of God. It is for that which we bring that the creation groans and hopes.

I am going to take a sharp left turn here so hang on for a minute.

United Methodist pastors, in seeking ordination, have their ?call to ministry? tested by their sponsoring local church, their graduate education, their mentor and the various boards charged with the process of certifying ordination. During this process I realized that before I was called, I was pushed. God pushed me by making me painfully sensitive to the groaning of creation. When I look around I cannot avoid hearing the groans and seeing the suffering. God, by a deep soul pain, a groaning in pregnancy or waiting for adoption, pushed me into a need for finding a way to comfort the afflicted.

I didn?t know it at the time, but in 1965, Hal David and Burt Bacharach wrote and Jackie De Shannon sang what was to become my prayer for life.[2] If you know it and you hear in it a prayer to end the groaning of the world, ?then sing with me:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love

It?s the only thing that there?s just too little of

What the world needs now is love, sweet love,

No, not just for some, but for everyone.

So now I had a push and a prayer, but I didn?t have a way. The way to help, the call, came in my early 20?s when I discovered Jesus. It wasn?t that I hadn?t heard of Jesus. I had been raised in a Christian family and Christian congregations. But there came that moment when I saw for myself that Jesus was God?s love made flesh; that the way of Jesus was the way of love coming into and caring for the groaning world.

I saw in Jesus and those who were true disciples a vision of the kingdom of heaven; a vision which showed me that in Jesus the servant love needed was both possible and present. It was then that I felt that my life was called to serve no other God, no other love and no other purpose than to be a disciple of Jesus and carry to a groaning world the good news and the fact of a new creation. I was called to be a child of God who, by word and deed, might end at least a small portion of the world?s groaning for redemption.

Quickly along the way God taught me, through a great and repeated humbling, that I needed you, my sisters and brothers in the family of God, as mentors and companions. I learned that I cannot stay devoted and dedicated to God in worship, study and service without your presence and aid. So I have stayed with God?s call to pastoral ministry not because I am strong, but because I am weak. I have stayed with pastoral ministry because I see you, the beloved children of God, as the best answer to the groans of the world. It is here, in the congregation of the children of God that the love of God made flesh, if not always lived completely, is at least the spoken and prayed for purpose of all the future. I have come and I stay with the family of God because I need you,sa, that together we might bring the hope of new creation to fruition.

God pushed my heart into ministry by the groans of the world, taught me to pray for love and pulled my heart into ministry by the hope of becoming more like Jesus. And I have stayed in pastoral ministry because God has shown me that you are the children of God and the answer to the world?s groaning for the kingdom of justice, truth, peace and love.

Shalom and Amen.

What Will Facebook?s Perfect Storm Of An IPO Leave Behind?

calming-manatee-2The Facebook IPO was supposed to be Silicon Valley's shining moment.?It's the book-end for the decade of recovery that followed the first wave of consumer Internet companies. It was the debutante ball for the next great Silicon Valley company, the one with the most potential to last a generation or longer. Instead, it's turned into a public relations disaster. If we look a little more closely though, the Facebook IPO probably has more devastating consequences for the rest of the late-stage private market than it does for the company itself.

Most errors are quickly forgotten. Others end up remaking the face of science

Image: Photograph by Dan Saelinger

In Brief

  • Mistakes can push scientific understanding forward. Errors that touch on deep features of the world can be more valuable in the long run than narrowly correct ideas.
  • Famously important scientific mistakes include Niels Bohr?s atomic model, the theory of continental drift (in its original form) and the experiments of Enrico Fermi that led to nuclear fission.
  • Two less well-known errors also stand out: a vagabond physicist devised a faster-than-light telegraph in the 1980s. The hunt to uncover its flaws drove advances in quantum information theory.
  • In the 1940s Max Delbr?ck, the key founder of molecular biology, based his research on a number of incorrect and misleading assumptions. He would go on to win a Nobel Prize.

Perhaps more than any other profession, science places a premium on being correct. Of course, most scientists?like most living humans?make plenty of mistakes along the way. Yet not all errors are created equal. Historians have unearthed a number of instances in which an incorrect idea proved far more potent than thousands of others that were trivially mistaken or narrowly correct. These are the productive mistakes: errors that touch on deep, fundamental features of the world around us and prompt further research that leads to major breakthroughs. Mistakes they certainly are. But science would be far worse off without them.

Niels Bohr, for example, created a model of the atom that was wrong in nearly every way, yet it inspired the quantum-mechanical revolution. In the face of enormous skepticism, Alfred Wegener argued that centrifugal forces make the continents move (or ?drift?) along the surface of the earth. He had the right phenomenon, albeit the wrong mechanism. And Enrico Fermi thought that he had created nuclei heavier than uranium, rather than (as we now know) having stumbled on nuclear fission.

Ree Varcoe: Honoring the Honesty Box

There's something about the New Zealand landscape that is just a little beyond special. I'm not talking about the natural, ever-changing and rugged beauty of the place itself, which hits you squarely in the eye at every corner -- that's something we tend to take for granted. It's more the objects that are made by hand, peppered around the countryside with simplicity, integrity and obvious care.

These little gems are homemade stalls that sit alongside countless, meandering roads, each offering perfect specimens of fruit, vegetables, flowers and other things. The wares on offer sit patiently and unattended, refreshed by their owners at least daily, accompanied by a plain little container. Wooden, plastic or otherwise, they are each marked "Honesty Box," inviting passersby to put in a dollar or two -- sometimes a couple more -- in exchange for a heaving bag of mandarins, peaches, asparagus, corn, tomatoes, bouquets of flowers... you get the picture.

Around the corner from our home, a fellow named Frank grows his own tomatoes to export overseas in huge, block-long glass houses. He also has a little stall on the roadside where bags of his produce are piled in crates for anyone to take, cheaper than you'd find at the grocery store, with proceeds benefiting the local country school. About 100 yards farther down the road, another neighbor sells some of his corn (notice we stopped to take a photo). The corn in the shed was sold out that day, but my boys found a little box full of coins still there, of course.

2012-05-22-photo10.jpg

This idea to build a little hodgepodge stall, place some homegrown goodness inside, and then invite others to take what they like and leave payment in return isn't new. It shows that a good many people here still have an intrinsic trust in others in this age when we are quick to doubt, find fault or simply don't trust as easily as did our ancestors. Why is it so hard for us to believe that people will do the right thing when given the opportunity? It's been said that others generally live up to our own expectations, so shouldn't we tell ourselves to expect the very best from people? In doing so, we teach the next generation to fearlessly do the same and perpetuate a way of thinking that never should have left us. Sure, there will be times we'll be let down by someone else. But there's a message in those incidents too. We are human. We all make mistakes. And even still, we should never give up on other people -- or ourselves either, for that matter.

Some of us are learning about life in the school of hard knocks. It's not easy to live without doubt when a person has known a great many disappointments. I get that. I have quite a special job, you see, leading a charity that helps support people living with mental illness. Plenty of them are cut off from society... and even their own families, in many cases. Some function quite well; others wish only to be what they believe is "normal." They want to have a job. Hold a driver's license. Have a cell phone to get in touch with others. Blossom into someone with self-respect, which many have never known. Believe that someone else cares. Feel loved. Simple things that you and I might take for granted. As part of my work, I am lucky to be meeting so many who teach me how important it is to keep that faith in others. They've put out their "honesty boxes." And they are ever so cautiously looking to us to pay them back with our understanding and kindness. Like Frank, who carefully grows his tomatoes to perfection, these people are tending to their hearts and minds to contribute their best to society.

In a world that moves incredibly fast these days, those who have the patience to be decidedly solicitous and respectful to others raises humanity to another level. If we examine our own tendency to doubt the inherent goodness of people and turn that around completely so that we have, in the first instance, faith in others, wouldn't the world be just a little bit better?

Government to present DNA evidence in Clemens case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Roger Clemens' genetic makeup helped make him one of the most successful pitchers in baseball history. Now prosecutors hope that Clemens' own DNA will help them convict him of a federal crime.

The government is expected to show test results Friday in Clemens' perjury trial that link the former pitcher's DNA to a used needle and other medical waste that also tested positive for steroids. Forensic scientist Alan Keel, who spent the last half-hour of testimony Thursday giving jurors a brief genetics lesson, returns to the stand to testify about the genetic tests he did for the government.

Chief prosecution witness Brian McNamee, Clemens' former strength and conditioning coach, testified earlier that he saved the needle and other materials from an alleged steroids injection of Clemens in 2001 and then turned them over to federal authorities in 2008. On Thursday, two experts testified that the materials tested positive for steroids.

Clemens is on trial for allegedly lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

While it will be a significant moment when the government places both the steroids and Clemens' DNA on the drug needle, the defense indicated early on it wouldn't contest that the needle had both on it. But Clemens' lawyer Rusty Hardin said in his opening statement that the defense will contend that McNamee put the steroids in the needle after injecting Clemens and that the coach in fact had used the needle to inject Clemens with vitamin B12.

Clemens has maintained for years that he received B12 shots and the local anesthetic lidocaine but not performance-enhancing drugs.

Another defense lawyer, Michael Attanasio, tried to push that theory by posing a hypothetical question to one of the government's expert witnesses, Jeremy Price, who once worked at the nonprofit Anti-Doping Research laboratory. Price testified Thursday that he found steroids but no trace of B12 or lidocaine on the saved items. So Attanasio asked: If he had a syringe with B12, used it, cleaned it out and then put in steroids, would the test reveal the B12? Price said he didn't know.

Thursday's main headliner was former major league outfielder-first baseman David Segui, who recalled that in a 2001 phone conversation, McNamee "mentioned that he had kept darts to get his wife off his back." Prosecutors hope that will bolster McNamee's testimony that he saved the medical waste to allay his wife's fears he would take all the blame if the drug use was discovered.

"He mentioned that the relationship between Brian and Roger had put stress on his married life. ... Coming and going ... leaving at the drop of a hat to go train," Segui said.

Segui, who has acknowledged using performance-enhancing drugs during his 15-year career with seven teams, wasn't allowed to say that "darts" means "needles." Despite a couple of spirited appeals by prosecutor Gilberto Guerrero, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ruled that the jurors would have to make that assumption themselves ? unless McNamee were to return to the stand to explain.

When Guerrero made a second run at the judge, Walton chided the prosecutor.

"I'm not the court of appeals," the judge said. "I made my ruling. So I don't reverse myself."

Segui, who became friends with McNamee when they met in Toronto during the 1999 season, also wasn't allowed to relate a second, similar "darts" conversation because he couldn't remember when it happened.

"I'm not good with dates. I don't log my life," said Segui, appearing with a shaved head, dark suit, white shirt and black tie. He was certain it happened before the publication of the 2007 Mitchell Report on drug use in sports, but that wasn't good enough for Walton.

"You are to disregard the question," the judge told the jurors, who had been ushered from the courtroom as the lawyers debated the matter.

But at least one juror apparently submitted a written question about that conversation.

"I've legally ruled that is not before you," Walton lectured in an irritated tone as he pointed toward the jury.

Clemens' lawyers have implied that McNamee conjured up the evidence after becoming the subject of a federal investigation in 2007. Segui's testimony was allowed by the judge because it appears to contradict that argument, a significant victory for the prosecution.

Another witness, former McNamee workout client Anthony Corso, is expected to give similar testimony about conversations in 2002 and 2005 with McNamee. That should come Friday, when the government is expected to wrap up its case.

Segui, whom the government portrayed as a reluctant witness, said under cross-examination that McNamee didn't attach a specific name to the "darts" but that he knew McNamee was training Clemens at the time.

"All I know is what I was told over the phone," said Segui, raising his hands as if to pantomime pushing away. "I didn't see it, didn't ask to see it."

Segui was a colorful witness. When asked whether McNamee was a cutting-edge coach, Segui said, "Yeah, for baseball. Baseball's prehistoric. They're still doing jumping jacks."

NIH study finds sigmoidoscopy reduces colorectal cancer rates

10:18 am Health Care

Flexible sigmoidoscopy, a screening test for colorectal cancer that is less invasive and has fewer side effects than colonoscopy, is effective in reducing the rates of new cases and deaths due to colorectal cancer, according to research sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. In a study that spanned almost 20 years, researchers found that overall colorectal cancer mortality (deaths) was reduced by 26% and incidence (new cases) was reduced by 21% as a result of screening with sigmoidoscopy. These results appeared online on May 21, 2012, in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Sigmoidoscopy involves examination of the lower colon using a thin, flexible sigmoidoscope, to view the anus, rectum, and sigmoid colon. It has fewer side effects, requires less bowel preparation and poses a lower risk of bowel perforation than colonoscopy.

The most important message is that, regardless of modality chosen, colorectal cancer screening lowers mortality from colorectal cancer, and all individuals 50 and over should be screened.

From 1993 to 2001, a total of 154,900 men and women aged 55 through 74 were randomly assigned to receive flexible sigmoidoscopy screening or usual care as part of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening trial. People in the usual care group (i.e. control group) only received screening if they asked for it, or if their physician recommended it. This large population-based randomized trial was designed to determine the effects of screening on cancer-related mortality. Participants assigned to the flexible sigmoidoscopy group were screened once on entering the study (baseline) and again three years to five years later. The participants were followed for approximately 12 years to collect data on cancer diagnoses and deaths.

? Overall, after an average of nearly 12 years, participants in the screening group had a 21% lower incidence of colorectal cancer overall and a 26% lower rate of colorectal cancer mortality than participants in the usual care group. This means that, over the course of 10 years, if 1,000 people followed the PLCO protocol of two sigmoidoscopy screenings, there would be approximately three fewer new cases and one fewer death from colorectal cancer than in a comparable group not receiving regular screenings.
? The incidence of distal colorectal cancer was reduced by 29%, and mortality from distal colorectal cancer was reduced by 50%, in the screening group.
? While there was no statistically significant decline in deaths from proximal colorectal cancer, the incidence of proximal colorectal cancer was reduced by 14% in the screening group.

?This is the second major trial that has shown that sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing the risk of dying of colorectal cancer. Sigmoidoscopy is less invasive than colonoscopy and carries a lower risk of the colon being perforated, which may make it more acceptable as a screening test to some patients,? said Barnett Kramer, M.D., director of NCI?s Division of Cancer Prevention. ?There are several effective screening tests for colorectal cancer, and the most effective screening test is the one that people choose to take.?

The researchers estimated that if they had used colonoscopy rather than sigmoidoscopy in this study, they would have identified 16% more cancers, two-thirds of which would have been proximal cancers. However, they were not able to determine what effect that may have had on proximal colorectal cancer mortality. There has been some controversy about how effective colonoscopy is in decreasing colorectal cancer mortality in different regions of the colon, with some studies suggesting that it is more effective against distal than proximal tumors. Sigmoidoscopy has never been directly compared to colonoscopy in a definitive clinical trial.

False-positive sigmoidoscopy results were observed in 20% of men and 13% of women in the screening group, but some of these false positives could have been the result of false-negative colonoscopies done to follow up on suspicious sigmoidoscopy findings. Approximately 22% of people in the screening group were sent for follow-up colonoscopies during the screening phase of the trial. [Source NIH]

Top Ten Creativity Questions ? The Spirit Of Self Help - The Best Of ...

2.?What is Innovation?

Innovation is the application of creativity to give rise to a new concept, product, service or process delivering something new and better to the world.

When we innovate, we work with the creative ideas we have developed and put them into practice. ?Innovation is NOT just about making new gadgets and fancy widgets. We can be innovative in New Product Design, but in many other ways too. New concepts, like how to lead and motivate people at work, as well as new services and processes.

3.?How Are They Related?

Innovation relies on creativity. You can not innovate without first developing some ideas.? Creativity is the source of innovation. ?If we do not use our creativity to develop a range of ideas and potential solutions, we can not select the most promising ideas and put them into practice.

Every improvement at work starts with an idea.

4.?What Jobs Require Creativity?

Every job requires creativity.

In The Everyday Innovation survey in 2009, NESTA found that all jobs, in all industries need creative thinking. There is not an employee who does not (at least sometimes) face problems and opportunities. This is when we need to call upon our capacities to develop ideas.

5.?Why Do Organisations Need Creativity?

Do businesses want employees at every level who develop ideas to solve problems and embrace opportunities?

Yes.

In a range of studies since 2003, The Accenture Institute for High Performance found that the highest performing companies in the world encourage staff at every level to solve problems to make things new and better.

The Ernst & Young Connecting Innovation to Profit report (2010) found that fast-moving, agile companies recognise the importance of creative thinking skills, concluding that ?the ability to manage, organise, cultivate and nurture creative thinking is directly linked to growth and achievement?.

The IBM Global CEO Survey 2010 interviewed more than 1500 CEO?s from 60 countries and 33 industries, concluding that creativity is the most important leadership trait for the future. They suggested that ?more than rigor, management discipline, integrity or even vision ? successfully navigating an increasingly complex world will require creativity.?

6.?Is Creativity a Strategic Priority?

Given that creativity is vital for all jobs in all industries, is the key leadership skill and directly contributes to growth and achievement?

It is little wonder that both the Boston Consulting Group Strategy Survey (2010) and the 15th?Global CEO Survey by PwC (2012) found creativity and innovation to be primary strategic aims.

Why? Because creativity = profit.

As one respondent in the Ernst & Young (2010) survey suggested???We assume that 50% of our revenue in 5 years? time must come from sources that do not exist today. That is why we innovate.?

7.?Can Creativity be Trained?

Yes.

Research studies have shown that creativity can be trained. Torrance & Torrance (1973) analysed 142 separate studies and concluded that creativity training significantly improves individual creativity and problem solving. This finding has been replicated many times.

In a modern review across two studies, Scott, Leritz & Mumford (2004) found that creativity training programmes produced improvements on everything from attitudes towards the importance of creativity at work through to improvements in job performance.

8.?What is the Best Way to Train People to be Creative?

Training someone to develop their creativity is similar to how we would train someone to play tennis.

A tennis coach would start by diagnosing your approach ? they would ask you to hit some balls, serve a few and examine your backhand and forehand. They would then develop a customised programme to address weaknesses and build on your strengths.

This principle of a diagnosis before training should also be applied to training and developing creativity, using the?me2?General Factor of Creativity psychometric diagnostic tool. This diagnostic tool allows individuals and teams to identify their creative profile across 12 factors clustered into four dimensions: Idea Generation, Personality, Motivation and Confidence.

After a diagnosis each person or team can choose creativity tools and exercises that play to their strengths and develop their weaknesses.

9.?What Are the Biggest Barriers to Creativity at Work?

There are many barriers to creativity at work.

The first and most fundamental barrier, is that people do not understand that they are creative and do not recognise where their strengths and weaknesses lie. They can rectify this by examining their creative profile using the?me2?General Factor of Creativity psychometric diagnostic tool ? before working on their natural strengths and weaknesses.

The second major barrier is that organisations do not understand how to identify, nurture, manage and develop creative thinking skills.

As the 15th?Global CEO Survey by PwC (2012) found???Overall, one in three CEOs say they are concerned that a skills gap is hampering the ability to innovate, and with innovation identified as a key strategic priority for most companies to get them out of the global economic slump, it is unsurprising that talent shortages are seen as a top threat to business expansion?.

10.?How Do You Build a Culture of Creativity?

Trying to produce a culture of innovation without creativity, is like building a house without the foundations. Creativity provides the ideas that allow for innovation.

So how do we build a culture of creativity?

This requires matching bottom-up processes with top-down processes.

Top-down processes are the formal practices that help to form the culture. Mission, vision, values, selection and recruitment processes, induction, succession-planning, etc.,

Organisations seem to excel at making creativity and innovation strategic priorities. They know they need to innovate to make the products and services that will drive revenue in the future. They are normally very good at including creativity and innovation in their mission, vision and values.

However, this is normally as far as the practice of creativity goes. They do not match these top-down approaches with bottom-up, grass roots creativity development.

To match the mission and vision from the top, individuals and teams need to be diagnosed and trained to develop their creativity skills. With the training comes the change in attitudes about the importance of creativity and the skills to develop ideas to solve problems and embrace opportunities.

Perhaps you might ask yourself some questions too?

PST: QBR's Barton suspended, very suspended

Joey Barton needs a good shaking. Or something.

But since we?re an evolved species, and since Barton isn?t a little toddler throwing a temper tantrum ? ahem, we?re all thinking the same thing, so let?s just move on ? we don?t do those kinds of things.

So instead of a good shaking, or a right proper spanking, even, the English FA has banned the naughty boy from Queens Park Rangers for 12 matches.

He?s also been fined ?75,000 (about $117,000) for being soccer?s version of the unstable Michael Douglas character from Falling Down.

Barton was sent off from QPR?s loss to Manchester City on the final EPL match day for clashing tin Carlos Tevez. In the ensuing maelstrom of mayhem, Barton kicked City?s Sergio Aguero and attempted to head butt Vincent Kompany.

As my Twitter buddy Abram Chamberlain (@MindOfAbram) said: If I?m QPR, I?m seeing if I can sell Joey Barton to a League 1 side for ?17, some scones and a cup of Earl Grey.

Well said, indeed.

(AP) ? Jason Kipnis left his flesh and blood on home plate as he scored the go-ahead run against the Tigers.

The Cleveland Indians, with Kipnis diving across the dirt to score on a throwing error by Detroit first baseman Prince Fielder in the eighth inning, scraped out a 4-2 win Wednesday night.

Kipnis had three hits, rubbed his right arm raw as he broke a 2-2 tie, and said the Indians couldn't help but feel the emotion of a second straight win over the defending AL Central champions to guarantee winning the three-game series.

"There's lots of games left, but you feel it," Kipnis said, his arm scratched and bleeding.

"We're playing the team that caught us and dominated the division the last half of last year."

The Tigers won the last 10 meetings with Cleveland a year ago and looked like they were going to break open the tie in the top of the eighth when they loaded the bases with none out.

Vinnie Pestano (2-0) made sure they didn't.

He struck out Jhonny Peralta, got Ramon Santiago on a weak grounder that forced a runner at home, and fired a called third strike past pinch-hitter Alex Avila on a 3-2 count.

"I've been in that situation before and the thing to do is not curl up," Pestano said. "When your back is against the wall, there is only one way to go."

The right-hander extended his team relief record to 23 straight outings with at least one strikeout.

With two outs in the seventh, Cleveland's Joe Smith got the dangerous Miguel Cabrera to ground out with the bags jammed.

"Without those guys (the bullpen), life would be very tough for us," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "That was a real team effort."

Kipnis singled off the glove of Phil Coke (1-1) with one out to start the winning rally and took third on a double into the left-field corner by Asdrubal Cabrera.

Travis Hafner then grounded to Fielder, whose low throw handcuffed Avila at the plate and allowed Kipnis to score. Carlos Santana's sacrifice fly scored Cabrera.

"It clearly was inaccurate," Fielder said. "It didn't hit him in the glove. If I made the play it would have been easy, but I didn't."

Chris Perez pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th consecutive save after blowing a lead in the season opener April 5.

Critical of Cleveland fans last weekend for booing him and giving Cleveland the majors' lowest attendance, Perez praised them for giving Pestano a standing ovation.

"That was great, just great," Perez said. "It may have been the loudest I've heard them. It may have given the offense a lift. It may have been coincidence, but I don't think so."

The Tigers were emotionally drained after stranding 10 on base and going 2 of 12 with runners in scoring position.

"You can get runners out there, but you have to get them in," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It's pretty simple. There's no rocket science in this one."

Hafner's two-run homer in the sixth off Tigers starter Doug Fister tied it at 2.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the sixth off Indians starter Zach McAllister when the ball bounced their way.

Quintin Berry, called up from Triple-A Toledo and making his big-league debut at age 27, got his first career hit on a bunt between first and second. Second baseman Kipnis wasn't going to get the speedy Berry on the tough play, but when the ball rolled past him, Berry hustled to second for a double.

Andy Dirks followed with a line drive directly at right fielder Shin-Soo Choo, who broke in, then saw it go over his head for an RBI double. Dirks took third on Cabrera's flyout to right ? then scored on a close play at home to make it 2-0.

With the infield in, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera dove to stop Fielder's hard grounder and threw home from his knees. Dirks, running on contact, slid in as catcher Santana took the throw in the dirt and applied a late tag.

McAllister gave up two runs and eight hits over 6 1-3 innings.

Fister gave up five hits and two runs over 6 2-3 innings. The Tigers have scored nine runs in his five starts.

His last win was over Cleveland on Sept. 26, completing a sensational stretch for the right-hander. He went 7-0 with a 0.65 ERA in his last eight starts of 2011 to help the Tigers win the AL Central.

NOTES: Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon was ejected by plate umpire Jerry Meals for yelling from the dugout in the bottom of the seventh. ... Indians 3B Jack Hannahan was available to play for the first time since May 13, but missed his ninth straight game. He said he's nearly recovered from a sore back. ... Indians RHP Josh Tomlin, on the disabled list with wrist tendinitis since May 8, is scheduled to threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Thursday. ... Barry started in center as Austin Jackson missed his sixth game with an abdominal strain. Leyland said he's concerned that Jackson, batting .331 with 29 runs in 36 games, could end up on the disabled list. ... Hafner fouled a ball off his foot early and limped around in succeeding at-bats. He was replaced for a pinch runner in the eighth.
