Belkin fills the void with first third-party Lightning accessories for Apple devices

Belkin unveils first thirdparty accessories for Apple Lightning connectors

When Apple dropped the 30-pin connector in favor of Lightning for the iPhone 5, new iPods and new iPads, it also dropped much of the current accessory market: short of an expensive adapter, years of collecting docks and more exotic peripherals were for nought. Belkin is stepping into that vacuum with what it says are the first officially sanctioned third-party Lightning accessories. Neither its Charge + Sync Dock (seen at left) for the iPhone 5 nor its Car Charger for Lightning (right) are what we'd call revolutionary, but they both cover missing pieces of the puzzle -- including Apple's, as the tech firm skipped making an iPhone dock of its own for this generation. Should either the audio-supporting dock or the iPad-capable charger sound appealing, both are up for pre-orders today and will ship in mid-November for $30.

Favorite Sleeping Options - Adoption.com Forums

It wasn't planned the first time, but our last two babies slept in their car seats in our walk in closet when they were tiny. They were close by but didn't disturb our sleep with every sound. Not sure if DSS would love that solution, but it worked well for us.

Japan Display rolls out next-gen displays for phones, tablets, in-car

When the genius of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi work under one roof there is bound to be more thinking and ideas. The collaboration of the three is now called Japan Technologies. The group has recently rolled out ?Innovation Vehicles?, thus paving the way for a future full of exciting display technologies. Among the three displays is a 5-inch Full HD displays with a pixel density of 438ppi. This seems ideal for every growing smartphones and probable slates. Next is a 7-inch WQXGA display that shows off resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels at 431ppi. Tablet PCs could do with such high-detail screens, given the competitive shoulder-barging in the display space. Closing the line is a 12.2-inch display with resolution of up to 1920 x 720 pixels. This seems perfect for in-car entertainment systems and navigation.

iPad Mini costs Apple $198, according to teardown

3 hrs.

If you were among those who snapped up an iPad Mini when it was released Friday, and paid $329 for the least-expensive model, you may not be happy to hear that an independent teardown of the little iPad shows the 16GB,?Wi-Fi-only?version may?cost just $198 to make.

IHS iSuppli, known for its hardware teardowns as well as its?frequent reports on the high-tech manufacturing sector,?told NBC News that the?base model of the iPad Mini "carries a bill of materials of $188, according to a preliminary estimate." When the $10 manufacturing expense is added in, "the total cost to manufacture the iPad Mini rises to $198."

The cost of markup?for the Mini may?sound quite high, but it makes sense when?compared to another recent family member, the iPhone 5.?

Sure, a?subsidized version of the 16GB phone cost $199 with a two-year wireless contract. But the full cost for the?baseline model, if you buy it unlocked or out of contract, is?$649. Compare that to the?IHS?teardown cost:?According to the firm,?it has a bill of materials of $199, and the charges only?rise to $207 when manufacturing costs are added in.

Both?Google and Amazon are selling tablets comparable to the iPad Mini, but their teardown costs ?are much closer to their actual sale prices. Google's Nexus 7 with 16GB costs $199 to buy, but has a total cost of $166.75. Amazon's?chief executive officer Jeff Bezos said recently?that the online retailer sells its $199?Kindle Fire HD with 16GB?"at cost,"?with profit coming instead from sales of online content.

With?Apple as the tablet leader, Google and Amazon have more work to do to try to catch up, and playing the "loss leader" card may be part of the strategy. Apple also leads in the number of apps available for the iPad, with more than 275,000.?

Still, the margin numbers are striking. Many have questioned Apple's high pricing of the iPad Mini, and the teardown information may be enough to keep some would-be buyers away from Apple's latest baby.

Jack Nicklaus exorcises Ford-era demons by stumping for Romney

CINCINNATI? -- You wouldn?t think a guy like Jack Nicklaus, arguably the most successful professional golfer of all time, would have many regrets in life.

But it was regret that drove Nicklaus to take a stand in the 2012 presidential election.

On Sunday, Nicklaus stood in a parking lot at Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals, and asked Ohioans to vote for Mitt Romney.

As Bengals fans grilled hot dogs and sipped beer before the game against the Denver Broncos? yes, a swing-state face-off?? Nicklaus stepped off a Romney bus parked next to a gravel works in the corner of Parking Lot E. It?s hard to describe the effect his presence had on some of the football fans, who at first were stunned to see who was standing in their midst.

?I never in a million years thought I?d be standing next to a Romney bus with Jack Nicklaus inside,? said Ryan Sullivan,? 29, an Ohio Department of Transportation worker. ?He?s the Golden Bear! He?s the guy Tiger Woods is chasing. He?s a great member of society, a class act.?

Cindy Luck, dressed in orange and black Bengals regalia, said she was certain Nicklaus? support would help Romney. ?It does make a difference,? said Luck, 50, co-owner of a Cincinnati title company. ?People listen to a man who has that much respect. It has a trickle-down effect.?

Nicklaus, 72, who normally stays above the political fray, was kicking off a two-day get-out-the-vote Ohio bus tour for Romney.?

Monday, he will be joined by Olympic gold medal figure skater Scott Hamilton in six Ohio towns, including Columbus, where he grew up.

In a brief interview moments after he stepped off the bus, Nicklaus said he is campaigning for Romney because he is unhappy with country?s direction. A father of five and grandfather of 22, he said he worried that his grandchildren would not be able to live the American dream as he has.

?I feel very strongly about that,? Nicklaus said. ?I just don?t like the direction we?re heading. I don?t like the divide we have in the country. I?ve never seen our country get split like this, and I really dislike that.?

Nicklaus, who attended Ohio State University, said his grandfather had worked on the railroads and had urged his sons ? Nicklaus? father and uncle?? to strive for a better life. Nicklaus? father became a pharmacist, and his uncle became a dentist.

?They all had the American dream, the ability to be able to have their own businesses, the same as I?ve done,? Nicklaus said. ?I don?t see our kids, our grandkids, having that ability under what?s happening with the government. I want them to have that opportunity. This is more about my family than anything else.?

But Nicklaus said he was also motivated by deep regrets over refusing to help his friend and golfing partner, President Ford, in his campaign against Jimmy Carter in 1976.

??He asked me to get involved and I didn?t,? Nicklaus said. ?I said, ?Mr. President, I?ve always stayed away from politics. I deal with people on both sides.? And he respected that and he never had an issue with that, and we played a lot of golf after that. But I didn?t help him and he lost Ohio by several thousand votes. Had he won Ohio, he would have won the election. I?ve always had big regrets about that.

??In spite of me not doing that, he paid me a great honor: I was a pallbearer at his funeral. He was such a good friend, such a nice man. That?s why I?ve gotten involved.?
