NFL player calls officials 'Three Stooges'

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray is neither a fan of replacement refs nor timely references.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Gray yelled at the refs and called them "the Three Stooges" during the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The replacement officials were in the midst of a 16-penalty game, including eight in a messy fourth quarter. They did manage to avoid ear pulls, head knocks and eye gouges.

It was another disastrous effort from the replacements. Wyatt said there was miscommunication about the number of timeouts Arizona had left and at least three instances where the referee misidentified a penalized player. On one of those occasions, the player wasn't even on the field.

There are seven officials on the field for NFL games, so it's not immediately clear whether Gray was specifically identifying three slapsticky zebras or whether he was so angry that he didn't care about numerically accurate insults.

"I think they just got a little sloppy at the end," head coach Mike Munchak said of the refs after the game, avoiding a Marx Brothers reference. "It seemed like nothing was called most of the game and then all of a sudden there's a lot of calls."

As for that penalty called on the guy who wasn't on the field? Chris Berman has no idea what all the fuss is about.
