JERICHO, West Bank (AP) ? Mitt Romney's assertion that Jerusalem is Israel's capital is absolutely unacceptable, a senior Palestinian official said Monday, voicing the strongest Palestinian criticism yet of the Republican presidential candidate.

Palestinian officials had largely maintained diplomatic silence during Romney's current visit to the region, even as the candidate embraced Israeli positions and in an apparent snub, avoided meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The U.S. is the dominant broker in efforts ? paralyzed since 2008 ? to set up a Palestinian state through negotiations with Israel, and Palestinian leaders do not want to antagonize key players, including Romney.

However, Romney's comments on Sunday about Jerusalem prompted a strong response.

The Palestinians want to establish a capital in east Jerusalem, captured and annexed by Israel in 1967. Most of the world, including the U.S., does not recognize the annexation. The U.S. and others keep their embassies in Tel Aviv.

On Sunday, Romney said flat out that Jerusalem is Israel's capital and strongly suggested he would move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem if he were president, supporting two key Israeli demands.

Saeb Erekat, an Abbas aide, said Romney's comments about Jerusalem were "absolutely unacceptable," adding that "such statements and policy will push the region toward extremists."

Erekat noted that Romney's positions on Jerusalem go against long-standing U.S. policy.

"At the end of the day, the U.S. has interests in this region, it has embassies in 57 Arab and Muslim countries," he said. "I don't think they will sacrifice everything for such statements, mere disturbing statements that will strengthen extremists in the region."

The fate of Jerusalem is one of the main sticking points in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will not give up any part of the city, taking a harder line than two of his predecessors who were ready to discuss a partition of the city.

Novartis drug Afinitor gets EU nod for breast cancer

ZURICH (Reuters) - Novartis said on Monday European regulators approved Afinitor to treat women with a certain type of breast cancer, following a panel backing in June.

The drug is the first in a class known as mTOR inhibitors to be approved for post-menopausal women with advanced hormone-receptor positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. American health regulators also backed the drug as a breast cancer treatment[ID:nL2E8IKD8B]

Afinitor, also known as everolimus, is designed to be given in combination with another drug, Aromasin, to treat women whose cancer has recurred or progressed after treatment with two other therapies. Aromasin is made by Pfizer Inc.

Novartis's drug - expected to become a major seller for the Swiss drugmaker - is already approved to treat patients with four other types of cancer, including kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

Singing the blues: August will be a blue moon month

The month of August brings us not one, but two full moons. The first will kick off the month on Wednesday (Aug.1), and will be followed by a second on Aug. 31.

Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full moons occur within a calendar month, the second full moon is called a "blue moon."

The full moon that night will likely look no different than any other full moon. But the moon can change color in certain conditions.

After forest fires or volcanic eruptions, the moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue.? Soot and ash particles, deposited high in the Earth's atmosphere, can sometimes make the moon appear bluish. Smoke from widespread forest fire activity in western Canada created a blue moon across eastern North America in late September 1950. In the aftermath of the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in June 1991 there were reports of blue moons (and even blue suns) worldwide. [Infographic: Blue Moons Explained]

Origin of the term
The phrase "once in a blue moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think.? In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 2.66 years.? And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months.

Many years ago in the pages of Natural History magazine, I speculated that the rule might have evolved out of the fact that the word "belewe" came from the Old English, meaning, "to betray."? "Perhaps," I suggested, "the second full Moon is 'belewe' because it betrays the usual perception of one full moon per month."

But as innovative as my explanation was, it turned out to be completely wrong.

More mistakes
It was not until that "double blue moon year" of 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "blue moon" was at long last discovered.? It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full moons instead of the usual three, that the third full moon should be called a blue moon.

But thanks to a couple of misinterpretations of this cryptic definition, first by a writer in a 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine, and much later, in 1980 in a syndicated radio program, it now appears that the second full moon in a month is the one that's now popularly accepted as the definition of a blue moon.??

This time around, the moon will turn full on Aug. 31 at 9:58 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (6:58 a.m. Pacific Standard Time), making it a blue moon.

However, there is an exception: for those living in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Far East as well as in New Zealand, that same full moon occurs after midnight, on the calendar date of Sept. 1. So in these regions of world, this will not be the second of two full moons in August, but the first of two full moons in September. So, if (for example) you reside in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky or Christchurch, you'll have to wait until September 30 to declare that the moon is "officially" blue.

Blue moon/New moon
While we've assigned the name blue moon to the second full moon of the month, it seems that we have no such name for the second new moon of the month.? Nonetheless, these opposing phases seem to be connected with each other. For if two new moons occur within a specific month, then in most cases, four years later, two full moons will also occur in that very same month.

As an example, there were two new moons in August 2008. Now, four years later, August 2012 will be graced with two full moons.

The next time we will see two full moons in a single month comes in July 2015 (July 1 and 31). But if you still have a calendar leftover from last year, check the month of July.

You'll find that there were two new moons on the 1st and the 30th.

Academic summer camps wrap up at Dordt College

The Dordt College campus was filled with students during the final week of June as it hosted Dordt Discovery Days (DDD) for junior high students and Dordt College Studies in Mathematics and Statistics (SIMS) for high school students.

A record 246 students from the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands participated in this year?s DDD, a week-long educational camp. Students picked two classes from nearly 40 options. Classes ranged from Japanese Printmaking to Design on a Dime and from? CSI Sioux Center to Eyewitness News. A complete list of this year?s classes can be found here.

In addition to classwork, kids participated in daily activities and games including Bigger and Better, along with evening Praise and Worship. Most of the students lived on campus and experienced a taste of what college life is like.

?Discovery Days is the fastest week of my year!? said Barb Mellema, co-director of the camp. ?Meeting the expectations of nearly 250 campers is a huge undertaking. But we know that we provide a great program where students are meeting new friends, exploring new ideas, and having new adventures.?

SIMS hosted 20 high school students from six states who are especially interested in mathematics and statistics. ?The week went very well, and I was surprised at how quickly the group bonded,? said Valorie Zonneveld, Dordt College mathematics professor and co-director of SIMS. ?It?s enjoyable to work with such a motivated and gifted group of students.?

Along with research and recreational activities, the program exposed students to careers and research in mathematics and statistics.

This is the first year that SIMS was offered at Dordt College, and the college expects to do it again next year. ?These opportunities to engage and mentor future college students are an exciting way to expand Dordt College?s impact in the world,? said Jim Bos, associate provost and registrar.
